A fire broke out early Wednesday at an apartment complex on the east side of Green Bay. The apartment is located at 1444 Smith Street and the fire broke out around 5:50 a.m. 10 people were taken to the hospital. Most of them suffered smoke inhalation. There are were working smoke detectors in the building.

Dean Walz was welcomed home to Albany Tuesday with a police and fire escort to his new house. The Superior Fire Department was rocked last week by the loss of one of their own. Battalion Chief Erik Sutton, 46, who retired in March after serving for 20 years on the department, died April 18. The cause of death was not released. "As a department we are trying to cope and understand this loss," wrote Fire Chief Steve Panger in a Monday news release.

A Superior Fire Department battalion chief who retired just a few weeks ago died on April 18 after "a long and brave struggle" with mental illness, Mayor Jim Paine said on Tuesday.
Erik Sutton, 46, who had served on the Superior Fire Department for 20 years, took his own life, Paine said. Sutton had sought and received care prior to his death.

For the second time this month, authorities have charged a man with aggravated battery for allegedly attacking a firefighter during the performance of his duties.
Christopher M. Roemer, 28, of the 2800 block of Gerson Avenue, Godfrey, was charged for allegedly kicking a firefighter in the shin and groin on Saturday.

In the wake of a female firefighter’s victory against the city in a discrimination lawsuit, Mayor Bob Buckhorn is being urged to name a high-ranking woman to replace retiring fire Chief Tom Forward.
Earlier this month, Buckhorn said he will name a replacement from within the ranks.
A women’s Facebook group with 15,200 members, called "Surly Feminists for the Revolution," recently weighed in on the process, casting the selection as a referendum on the discrimination and retaliation case brought by firefighter Tanja Vidovic — and the department’s reaction to it.

Gulfport Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt head-butted another firefighter during an alleged fight, according to an incident report filed with the Gulfport police department.
It happened at 11 a.m. April 6 at the Central Fire Station. “The suspect (Beyerstedt) became enraged in front of the complainant and the witness, cursing and lunging at the complainant causing the suspect’s head to come in contact with the complainant,” according to the report.

A relative of the Yorkville woman and child killed in a fire earlier this year is taking legal action, claiming the village fire department did not do enough to save their lives.
Heather Mishlanie and her 6-year-old daughter Taylor were killed after the Jan. 18 fire ravaged their upstairs apartment at 95 Campbell Ave.

A former Lynchburg Fire Department deputy chief was sentenced to a year and six months behind bars Tuesday after he was convicted of embezzling more than $70,000 in unauthorized purchases from a city-issued credit card and a nonprofit.
Jason Dale Campbell, 42, of Powhatan, pleaded guilty in Lynchburg Circuit Court to two felony counts of embezzlement by a government official and two felony counts of embezzlement.

An unmanned garbage truck caught fire near the city’s Pearl Street Facility at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. No one was injured, although smoke could be seen from more than a mile away. The vehicle was idling in the city’s bulk garbage lot at 830 Racine St. when heavy smoke and fire were observed coming from the cab, according to a release from the Racine Fire Department.

Firefighters say a white residue that has emerged in a neighborhood after a fire is harmless. The Oshkosh Fire Department says it was called to a fire at A.P. Nonweiler, 3221 Hwy. A, just after 6 p.m. Monday. A.P. Nonweiler makes industrial coatings and paints. The building's sprinkler system contained the fire, and firefighters were able to put it out quickly.

One person died in a Monday afternoon fire that burned a small barn, tin outbuilding and a couple acres of grass in Pepin County. The Pepin County sheriff’s office withheld the victim’s identity on Monday night, pending notification of family. Emergency workers were called at 3:03 p.m. for a fire with possible fatality at N7050 Hayes Road in the town of Lima.

18 people were taken to the hospital after the ammonia spill at Abbyland Foods in Abbotsford Monday evening. According to Chief Bert Nitzke from the Central Fire & EMS District, one of those people is a firefighter. He says the 18 people were transported for everything from fainting to respiratory stress.

Firefighters on Tuesday morning, April 24 responded to the scene of an apartment fire on Mohawk Avenue in Glendale. The call came in shortly before 2:00 a.m. When crews arrived on scene, they found smoke and fire coming from a first floor unit. In addition, one resident from the affect unit was found outside requiring medical attention.

A firefighter-EMT died March 30 of cardiac arrest after conducting search and rescue drills in full gear.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, Decatur County Fire Rescue firefighter-EMT Adam Taylor, 30, went home late into his shift after complaining of chest pains he thought were due to a pulled muscle.

Firefighters responding to a house fire in the Harbor Gateway area had to drop their gear and find cover after hearing gunshots ring out Monday morning.
Firefighters were on the scene of a fire on 154th Street near Orchard just before 5 a.m. in response to a structure fire. After they put out the fire at the two-story home, five to six gunshots rang out, forcing firefighters to drop their equipment and take cover.

PHOTO - A Hamilton Township police officer accidentally shocked a firefighter with her Taser while trying to get a patient under control. So, she apologized with a cake, according to the department's Facebook page.
Officer Darcy Workman was helping the fire department on an EMS call last week. When they got to the hospital the patient became unruly.
