Retired Richmond fire marshal David Creasy wasn’t among the firefighters from across Virginia who packed a Senate committee meeting Tuesday.
But Creasy, who died in October after more than four years of battling cancer, was well represented in the annual legislative battle to extend workers’ compensation benefits automatically to firefighters and other first responders stricken by certain forms of cancer they say are caused by exposure to toxic chemicals in the line of duty.

“THIS is why you should always sleep with you doors closed,” posted the Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department.

Montgomery Fire Rescue shared an intense video of a house fire to their social media Wednesday.
According to MFR’s Facebook page, the video is from a fire which happened around midnight in the 800 block of Buford Street. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the house was “fully involved” with flames and large amounts of smoke.

A destroyed truck and large sign on the side of a Columbus County highway have no doubt caught the attention of thousands of drivers, and the fire chief behind the display hopes the message will shock people into yielding to emergency vehicles on the road.
"The message is: Put down your phones, pay attention to what's going on, give us your undivided attention, so that way we can remain safe," said Steve Camlin, chief of Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire-Rescue.

Ann Arbor firefighters are getting retroactive raises going back more than two years.
The City Council voted 9-1 to OK a three-year contract with the firefighters union Tuesday night, Jan. 22.
The last negotiated collective bargaining agreement expired at the end of 2016. The new one runs Jan. 1, 2017 to Dec.

Despite pushback from the firefighters’ union, the Orlando Fire Department on Friday inducted 23 civilian paramedics, a response to the city’s growing population and demand for emergency medical services, the department said.
Among the 23 hires are 14 women, a record number for an OFD graduating class, according to the release.

Firefighters, EMS personnel, or any member of the Virginia National Guard Armed Forces Reserves may soon be able to carry a concealed weapon without a permit thanks to legislation passed by Virginia’s Senate Tuesday.
SB 1012, introduced by Sen. Amanda Chase (R – Amelia County, Colonial Heights), would allow specific firefighters and EMS providers to carry concealed weapons without a permit “provided that such firefighter or person employed as emergency medical services personnel has been approved to carry a concealed handgun by his fire chief or emergency medical services chief.
