Governor Evers signs order to fly flags at half-staff to honor fallen Wisconsin firefighters

Governor Tony Evers has signed Executive Order #222, mandating the flags of the United States and Wisconsin to fly at half-staff as a tribute to firefighters who died in the line of duty. The order was announced in a press release issued on Thursday, May 2. Flags will be lowered on Sunday, May 5, in observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.

Western Lakes Fire District welcomes new ladder truck

PHOTOS: Firetrucks during their years of service become a highly recognizable part of the communities they serve. Such is the case for Ladder Truck 53, which began serving the Oconomowoc area in 1997. Recognizable for its yellow color and Raccoon mascot on its bucket, the Pierce rear-mount platform truck has responded to numerous significant fires including the Baptist church explosion across from City Beach in 2008 and a five-alarm fire in downtown Oconomowoc in 2012.

Wausau Fire Department to hold live-burn training event next week

VIDEO: The Wausau Fire Department is expected to conduct a comprehensive training exercise in firefighting and fire investigation from May 6-8. This exercise will happen at a home located at 1514 North Second Street, at the intersection of Bridge Street. The training session is tailored for members of the Wausau Fire Department and the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

Beaver Dam Fire Department Earns ISO Rating 2

The Beaver Dam Fire Department has been awarded a Public Protection Classification of 2. The rating comes following a thorough review by the Insurance Services Office, or ISO, and is an improvement on the previous classification of 3 that was given in 2019. Beaver Dam Fire Chief Michael Wesle highlights several changes made since then that helped the department earn their 2 rating.

VIDEO: Large tractor-trailer fire closes portion of I-95 in Connecticut

PHOTOS: A major truck fire on I-95 south between exits 15 and 14 in Norwalk has shut down the interstate. State police say it happened around 5:30 a.m. The large fire involved a petroleum tractor-trailer, a tanker and a car. The tanker truck was carrying 8,500 gallons of petroleum, fire officials say.

Alabama governor signs proclamation recognizing Dothan as the state’s first HeartSafe City

Governor Ivey signed a proclamation recognizing Dothan’s HeartSafe initiative, Tuesday. Leaders from the Southeast Health Medical Center and Dothan Fire Department visited the state capitol for Governor Ivey to recognize Dothan as the state’s first HeartSafe city. The HeartSafe program has trained over 7,000 people for CPR.

Captain faces 10 years in prison for fiery deaths of 34 people aboard California scuba dive boat

De Pere firefighters rescue pelican entangled in fishing line off of shore in Voyageur Park

PHOTOS: After receiving a distress call recently, firefighters in De Pere helped to rescue a pelican that was entangled in a fishing line with a hook caught in its mouth and foot. A Facebook post from the De Pere Fire Rescue details the incident after a concerned citizen called first responders when they noticed a pelican that was possibly trapped in a fishing line near a walking trail north of Voyageur Park.

Wisconsin soybean farmers fund SoyFoam effort to reduce PFAS in firefighting foam

Stray bullets hit Louisiana fire station

VIDEO: First responders become victims of a drive-by shooting in Shreveport. The personnel are okay and were not injured. Despite being shaken, they quickly rushed back into action. Stray bullets struck an innocent bystander and a fire station on Monday night. South Dakota fire department unveils second fire training facility in state's western region

VIDEO: The Rapid City Fire Department announced the opening of its new state-of-the-art training tower with the hopes of training the best firefighters statewide. The Rapid City Fire Department’s new five-story training tower was unveiled Tuesday. Update: Woman pulled from Lake Mendota later died at the hospital, police confirm

A woman who was pulled from Lake Mendota by firefighters in the early morning hours last Friday died at the hospital, according to the Madison Police Department. Spokesperson Stephanie Fryer said officers responded to Iota Ct. around 4:25 a.m. Fryer said officers saw a woman's body in the water and immediately called for help from the Madison Fire Department's Lake Rescue team.

Mental health support for Milwaukee firefighters; new initiative launched

The Milwaukee Fire Department launched on Monday, April 29 a new initiative to provide first responders with essential mental health support. A news release says the All-Hands Initiative, therapy sessions, fully funded by ITS, and facilitated by licensed mental health professionals from First Responders Psychological Services, LLC, will be available to firefighters starting May 1.

Oshkosh Fire Department launching new fall prevention website

Officials with the Oshkosh Fire Department say they are launching a new fall prevention website in an effort to increase awareness of the risk of falls. According to a release, Officials say the CDC has Wisconsin listed as having the highest fall death rates among older adults in the United States. Locally, the Oshkosh Fire Department says a person over 60 years old suffering a fall is the most frequent incident type that they get called to respond to.

Theresa candy shop works to rebuild after devastating fire

VIDEO: Large fire in California burns vacant commercial building near transit station, officials say

Fire crews are still on scene in Concord blocking off roads, several hours after a large fire gutted a commercial building. The fire broke out near the BART station on East Street and Sunset Avenue. That is right across the street from the BART station and in a stretch of commercial buildings. Overnight, the front part of the building collapsed in flames.

PHOTOS: Firefighters are used to getting to their destinations in a hurry. Hubie Widmer took 10 years to complete his quest. “I said, ‘You know, I want to get my picture taken in front of every fire department in the state,’” Hubie said. In March, the Watertown firefighter completed his task. Over a decade, Hubie visited 775 fire departments – as best as he can tell relying on state records – every fire department in Minnesota.
