New Tech Helps Texas Police And Firefighters Do Jobs Faster, More Effectively

VIDEO: The North Richland Hills Police and Fire Departments showed off new technology Thursday they say will allow them to do their jobs more effectively and in less time. Jennie Espy, a North Richland Hills Police Department Crime Scene Investigator said, “This is absolutely fantastic technology.” The state-of-the-art device scans everything in its site — 360 degrees — and provides 3D photographs of a crime scene, major crash or an arson fire.

Colorado fire department seeks better guidelines in aftermath of firefighter's death

It’s been more than two months since Summit Fire & EMS firefighter Ken Jones fell to his death while fighting a blaze in Copper Mountain, though the feelings of grief are still fresh for his second family at the fire department. Jones’ picture still stands on a table in the entranceway of Summit Fire’s administration building in Frisco — the first thing visitors see on their way into the building each morning.

'Another Tool for First Responders': Massachusetts sheriff helps families with autism seat belt covers

It was on a trip to Britain and Ireland that Norfolk County Sheriff Jerry McDermott first saw seat belt covers that notify first responders that the wearer has autism, the Patriot Ledger reported. Half a world away, a light bulb went off, McDermott said that he thought that covers could be helpful at home too.

On This Day: Feb. 14, 1995, Three Pittsburgh firefighters killed battling East Hills fire

VIDEO: Today marks 25 years since the East Hills fire. Three firefighters died that heartbreaking Valentine’s Day in 1995. Capt. Thomas Brooks arrived on the scene with Engine 17 and Patricia Conroy and Marc Kolenda responded with Engine 8 just after midnight to the home on Bricelyn Street. They became separated from their other crew members while inside the burning home.

Streetcar derails in Milwaukee; firefighters get it on track

AFirefighters were called in to help get a derailed Milwaukee streetcar back on track. The streetcar, known as The Hop, derailed Thursday afternoon on Milwaukee's east side. The car remained upright and appeared to be just slightly off the track. One of the Milwaukee Fire Department's heavy rescue units was able to lift the car up and place it back on the tracks using specialized equipment.

Janesville apartment fire averted by sprinklers

A potentially disastrous fire was thwarted by working sprinkler systems late Wednesday night at an apartment building at 221 N. Franklin St., according to Captain John McManus of the Janesville Fire Department. Firefighters responded a call at about 9:18 p.m. Wednesday. McManus said a basket of clothing had started on fire in a closet when the sprinklers kicked in and doused the flames.

Ohio House passes emergency responders PTSD coverage bill

The Ohio House has once again approved a measure covering post-traumatic stress disorder for emergency responders who haven't suffered a physical injury. “Our brave first responders deserve to have PTSD illnesses treated under our law, even though the law does consider them comparable to a physical injury,” said Rep.

Report offers first look at events that led to Washington firefighter’s death

The Spring Coulee Fire was estimated to be the size of a basketball court when it was first reported at 3:59 p.m. on Sept. 1, 2019. Seven minutes later it was estimated to be the size of a football field. Three minutes after that evacuations were issued, flames were around 10 feet high and the fire had burned 5 to 10 acres.

Utah fire department debuts hybrid-electric firetruck

The Salt Lake City Fire Department debuted a new plug-in hybrid electric fire engine to the public at the Sugar House firehouse Wednesday. The new fire truck came about because of cooperation with the Sustainability Department and Public Services Department. The SLCFD says they are invested in exploring options to reduce their carbon footprint and improving air quality.

Colorado fire department gets special blanket to help extinguish car fires quickly

With more electric cars on the road and with the proximity to Pikes Peak International Raceway, the Fountain Fire Department has purchased a fire blanket to be used for car fires and industrial fires. The 70-pound fire blanket is made from two layers of woven glass fiber fabric and an inner layer of fire retardant film which works together to remove the oxygen supply from the fire resulting in the fire being extinguished.

Dryer fire cancels classes at Lineville Intermediate School in Howard

Maine town told to close fire station, hire more firefighters

The town should close the Foreside fire station and hire more full-time firefighters to better meet the increasing number of calls for emergency aid, a consultant told the council Monday. President’s budget recommends less funding for AFG/SAFER, more for USFA

President Donald Trump has released his budget recommendations for fiscal year 2021, including a proposed increase in funds for the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and decrease in Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate fire & Emergency Response Grants (SAFER) allocations. AFG and SAFER received a combined total of $355 million in fiscal year 2020, which the President’s Budget Request (PBR) recommended lowering to $344.

Georgia fire chief wants to create a pipeline for high school graduates to join his department

Local students could soon have a fast track to a stable career, thanks to The Augusta Fire Department. Augusta Commissioners are on board, as well as the Richmond County Board of Education Board Members. Fire destroys barn in rural Holmen

Nine area fire departments responded to a barn fire late this afternoon. They were called out just after 4 o’clock to County Road TT in Holmen. Seven of the fire departments went to the scene of the fire, while two of the departments went to the Holmen Fire department to cover any other fire calls. A tractor caught fire inside a barn where hay was stored.

South Milwaukee firefighters reunite with dog rescued from Lake Michigan ice shelf

There was a sweet reunion at the South Milwaukee Fire Department Tuesday, Feb. 11. A 12-year-old bulldog named "Tuff" came back to see the firefighters who rescued him. On Jan. 31, Tuff got stranded on an ice shelf near the Lake Michigan shoreline in South Milwaukee. Firefighters were called and they put their professional skills to work, bringing Tuff back to shore.
