Study will help support and protect women in the fire service

As more women join the fire service, it’s imperative to understand the occupational risks involved for these women. And thanks to $1.5 million dollar grant from FEMA that will be possible. The funding will help support research to examine how being a firefighter affects women’s health. “There’s the fires, the smoke that we breathe in, but it’s also the exhaust from the fire trucks, the ambulances that we get exposed to on a daily basis,” said Captain Liliana Pesqueira, the Tucson Fire Department.

New York Governor: $29M in grants available to support essential workers, first responders

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday that $29 million is available to support essential workers and first responders through the Empire Pandemic Response Reimbursement Fund program. Cuomo says the program was created to help reimburse out-of-pocket childcare, transportation, lodging, and other qualifying expenses that enabled workers to perform their duties.

Defendant in California's Ghost Ship warehouse fire to serve remainder of 12-year sentence at home

The main leaseholder of an Oakland warehouse that caught fire during a party in 2016, killing 36 people, was sentenced Monday to 12 years in prison but may spend the remainder of his term at home as part of a plea deal with prosecutors. Derick Almena, 50, will serve one-and-a-half years at home with a GPS ankle monitor due to credit for time already spent behind bars while awaiting trial and good behavior.

More Than $18K Raised for Bitten New York Paramedic

Emergency workers and local officials are responding to news of a 28-year-old paramedic from Staten Island who was allegedly bitten on the face early Friday morning by an emotionally disturbed teenager in Brooklyn. Jenna Piscitello, of Great Kills, could have permanent scarring on her cheek from the attack, which occurred as medics were attempting to lay the female patient on a stretcher, according to a statement issued by the union representing city EMS workers.

No injuries in La Crosse apartment fire

No one was injured in an apartment fire on La Crosse’s northside Monday. Firefighters were called to the apartment building at 1208 Avon St. at about 6:55 a.m. When they arrived on scene, thick, black smoke was coming from a second story apartment in the multi-family building. It took the 22 firefighters about 5 minutes to put out the fire and account for all of the tenants in the building.

Citizens petition demolition of historic La Crosse Fire Station No. 4, hopeful for preservation

A group of citizens has launched an online petition encouraging city officials to preserve a North Side fire station instead of demolishing it for an updated facility. “The building is a cultural and economic asset that belongs to the taxpayers,” said the petition, which had just over 100 signatures Monday morning.

Spring Wildfire Risk Remains Across Wisconsin's Storm Damage Areas

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) urges the public to complete any vegetative debris burning and check any previously burned piles for lingering embers before the snow melts, particularly in the storm-impacted areas of Langlade and Oconto counties. This is the safest time of the year to burn as fires are less likely to escape and cause a wildfire.

7 CenterPoint Energy workers injured in natural gas explosion in Texas, authorities say

VIDEO: Seven CenterPoint Energy workers were injured in a massive gas fire near Klein on Friday. It happened in the 18700 block of Gleannloch Lakes Boulevard around 6 p.m. Comcast crews were in the area working when they punctured a gas line, according to the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office. CenterPoint Energy crews were then sent to fix the line.

Woman dies in fire truck crash in Florida; 5 firefighters injured

PHOTOS: A 52-year-old Ormond Beach woman died and five City of Daytona Beach firefighters were hurt following a traffic crash near Halifax Health Medical Center on Saturday. Just after 5 p.m., a Daytona Beach Fire Department truck flipped over after a collision with a silver Pontiac driven by the woman, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department.

Several fire departments withdraw recruits from training after New York firefighter injured

Several fire departments pulled recruits from the state’s fire academy after a city firefighter suffered a medical emergency while participating in a training drill Wednesday at the facility in Montour Falls, near Watkins Glen. Battalion Chief Sean McGarrity of the Ridge Road Fire Department, in Greece, Monroe County, confirmed that four department recruits were pulled from the training at the New York State Academy of Fire Science in Schuyler County.

Fire destroys North Dakota fire station, 6 trucks

Fall River Firefighter transported to UW Hospital after putting out garage fire

Fall River firefighters responded to a garage fire attached to an apartment complex at 361 Fox Trail Saturday, just before 9:00 p.m. Once on the scene, firefighters found smoke coming from one of the garages.

Fox Crossing home damaged following fire

Fox Crossing officials say they’re investigating the cause of an early morning fire that ended up damaging a home Sunday. According to the Fox Crossing Fire Department, crews were called to the 700 block of Hummingbird Lane just before 6:30 a.m. for a report of a shed on fire. While traveling to the address, the Communications Center said they had confirmed it was a residential house fire.

One displaced following Grand Chute duplex fire

Fire officials say one person has been displaced following an overnight fire at a Grand Chute duplex. According tot he Grand Chute Fire Department, crews were called to a building at 1110 South Nicolet shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, firefighters found flames coming from the roof, and crews entered the building to do a search, as well as attack the fire.

Cornell area firefighter returns home from hospital

An emotional day in Cornell on Friday, as Firefighter Justin Fredrickson was released from an Eau Claire hospital. “It is a brotherhood, fire departments are a brotherhood, I can’t explain it unless you’ve been here,” says Cornell Area Fire Department Chief Dennis Klass. Madison firefighter and paramedic knew his job came with risk; then COVID-19 hit

Brandon Jones chalks it up to pure luck. There have been many calls Jones went on as a Madison firefighter and paramedic where he could have been infected with COVID-19. Like the young boy who broke his arm, whom Jones consoled closely even though the boy wasn’t wearing a mask. He found out later on that the boy tested positive for COVID-19.

6 firefighters hurt battling massive blaze that tore through strip of stores in New York

Firefighter makes history as highest ranking woman in Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire

Kari Burnham said, "This is something I love to do. It's like a dream come true." Burnham's passion is being a firefighter. Now she takes the title of lieutenant, which is an accomplishment that puts her in the history books as the highest-ranking woman in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire.

West Virginia city remembers heroes who died in 1949 Woolworth fire

Michigan university developing statewide mental health program to address stress among first responders, their families
