The La Crosse Fire Department has been installing new burners on stoves in public housing. The burners will cook people’s holiday dinners without the danger of fires.
SmartBurners prevent cooking oils from reaching a temperature in which they catch on fire. “Most of the cooking fires we see are the result of cooking oils getting to the point where they auto ignite,” said Pat Corran, the Fire Department’s community risk educator.

If you drive by any of the six Eau Claire fire stations, you may soon see a green wreath hanging up on the wall. But it's more than a regular Christmas decoration, as the fire department's annual "keep the wreath green" campaign is set to start on Thanksgiving.
The goal of the campaign is to try and encourage people in the community to stay safe this winter, and to prevent fires during the holiday season.

Kids can help Green Bay firefighters this winter season.
The Green Bay Metro Fire Department and Green Bay Water Utility are relaunching the Hydro’s Helpers program.
Children pick a fire hydrant near their home and pledge to keep it free of snow during the winter months.
They will also be responsible for reporting any damages to the hydrant to their local water department.

PHOTOS: Four people are safe after an SUV wound up in Lake Winnebago on Sunday.
Fond du Lac Fire Rescue says they were called near Frazier Point in Lakeside Park for a report of a vehicle in the lake.
The initial report said that two children were on the hood of the SUV and two adults were inside.
When rescue crews arrived they found all four people on the shore unhurt.

VIDEO: A large fire broke out on Bald Head Island on Saturday at around 8 p.m. Three units in Lighthouse Landing and one home were destroyed in the fire. Las Vegas’s MGM Grand Hotel and Casino fire, which occurred on November 21, 1980, killed 85 people and injured 700 more. The fire, caused by an electrical fault associated with a refrigerated pastry display case, originated in an unoccupied restaurant on the casino’s first floor. The fire was discovered by hotel staff early in the morning when, by that time, it had evolved to open flaming and was increasing in size and intensity.

A Beloit man died in a house fire in the 1100 block of Lincoln Avenue this morning (Friday, Nov.19).
Crews from the Beloit Fire Department responded to the house fire at 4:19 a.m. after someone passing by reported heavy smoke coming from the home. The body of the man was found by fire crews in the home.

Lincoln firefighters said the blaze at the three-story Phi Kappa Tau fraternity house started about 4 a.m.
The 78-year-old house, the second-oldest building on the campus in north-central Lincoln, was owned by the fraternity and was on the National Register of Historic Places.
