More firefighters across Minnesota seeking help for mental health issues

VIDEO: Firefighters across Minnesota continue to seek help for post-traumatic stress in record-setting numbers. George Esbensen, president of the Minnesota Firefighters Initiative (or MnFire), told us the number of firefighters across Minnesota who’ve sought help for post-traumatic stress and other medical issues continues to grow, with 1,400 seeking assistance in 2023 and so far through August of this year, more than 900 have asked for help.

Retired firefighter recalls Smokey Bear balloon crash in New Mexico 20 years later

VIDEO: It's been 20 years since Smokey Bear struck a 670-foot radio tower west of Balloon Fiesta Park on Oct. 10, 2004. The hot air balloon became entangled in the 50,000-watt tower with two children and their pilot inside. Retired Los Ranchos Fire Department Lt. Dan Barela recalls the horrors of the incident when he and a PNM worker rescued all three inside.

Procession Held for Racine County Fire Captain Killed in Motorcycle Crash

VIDEO: A procession was held for a Racine County firefighter who died in a motorcycle crash in Walworth County on Thursday, Oct. 10. The procession was scheduled to go from Lakeland Aurora Medical Center in Elkhorn to a funeral home in Mount Pleasant on Saturday, Oct. 12. FOX6 had a crew stationed along the route at the Kansasville Fire Station on State Highway 11.

Daring rescue saves two as scaffold hangs off Milwaukee courthouse

VIDEO: Two workers were safely rescued after being trapped on a tilted scaffolding at the Milwaukee County Courthouse, prompting a swift response from the city's heavy urban rescue team. "While it is visually spectacular, it has been brought to a safe conclusion." Milwaukee fire Chief Aaron Lipski said.

VIDEO: Emergency personnel responded to the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine near Cripple Creek to reports of multiple people trapped underground after an elevator malfunctioned on Thursday afternoon. Officials got the call around 12 p.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, first responders learned there were 11 people on an elevator about 500 feet down.

Firefighters rescue dogs from Brookfield house fire

VIDEO: The Town of Brookfield Fire Department responded to a house fire on Watertown Road and Larry Court on Wednesday afternoon. Cellphone video shows flames shooting out the side of the home as fire crews arrived. The owner of the home tells 12 News his granddaughter was home when the flames broke out and that she was able to get out of the home along with two dogs.

Two John Deere riding lawnmowers and more stolen from Embarrass Volunteer Fire Department

Authorities say one fire department in Waupaca County was recently robbed and had two John Deere riding lawnmowers and other equipment stolen from them. According to a release from the Embarrass Volunteer Fire Department, thieves allegedly cut through a fenced-in area in a park and were able to gain access to a building being used for equipment storage.

Four honored for saving West Bend alderman after heart attack

The Milwaukee Fire Department and West Bend Fire Department honored four individuals who helped save the life of West Bend Alderman Mark Allen after he collapsed from a heart attack. Allen suffered the heart attack on Saturday, Aug. 17 at a Revitalize Milwaukee event. Barb Charlton, Greg Lyons, Amy Zielke and Robert Prange administered CPR before firefighters arrived.

Battling hidden fires deep inside silos present challenges to Wisconsin firefighters

City of Seattle to become first in nation with fire department EMTs administering buprenorphine medication in the field

The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) is expanding its Buprenorphine Pilot Program and Seattle will be the first city in the nation with a program for firefighters/emergency medical technicians (EMTs) to administer the medicine in the field. SFD paramedics began administering the drug earlier this year, and now an initial group of firefighter/EMTs will be trained as well.
