Newly appointed Fire Chief Jude Wolf vividly remembers the day he wanted to be a firefighter. He was 4 when he saw a fire at a newspaper plant in Milwaukee. “I remember walking down toward the scene, watching in awe, and from that moment, I had the dream of becoming a firefighter,” Wolf said. Four trucks burned Thursday, Jan. 11 at a business near S. 6th St. and Layton Ave. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Fire officials said it caused $300,000 in damage.
We're told Mortle Trucking lost three trucks as a result of the fire. The trucks are used to transport asphalt and gravel.

Jacob Gleason was believed to be traveling through the area on his way back to Houghton before he ended up in the woods. Miles Richard Bowers' first job as a firefighter in 1948 was to help tackle one of Jacksonville's worst fires at a paint factory.
One of his last jobs was in 2003 when he was named the city's fire chief for the second time. He had previously led the department from 1984 to 1988.
Bowers, who served longer than any other firefighter on the force, died Tuesday after a stroke.
