Wisconsin and the federal government should do more to support small-business creation, U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin said Tuesday during a stop at the Altoona fire station. Baldwin, a first-term Democrat up for re-election this fall, spent the first part of her visit meeting with local fire Capt. Jeff Dykes, founder and owner of Northern Star Fire, and discussing the challenges he faced in launching his business that developed equipment to help firefighters navigate through burning buildings.

Voters fighting for new Campbell firetruck

It's a half-million-dollar question: Should the town of Campbell Fire Department get a new firetruck? On April 3, voters will decide if a pumper truck that is more than three decades old should be replaced with a new one. "The tank is rusted. The truck leaks. We've had to pry open compartments to get to tools on calls," said Fire Chief Nate Melby of the Campbell Fire Department.

Anonymous donor gives $20,000 to Wales-Genesee Fire Department

VIDEO: Wales-Genesee Fire Chief Jim Moon got a call around Christmas time last year from someone wishing to remain anonymous. That mystery-person asked what the department needed the most. "So I told him well we need to replace our thermal imaging cameras, but they're $10,000 dollars apiece," Moon said.

Western Lakes Fire District crew delivers baby in Oconomowoc home

A scary situation early March 27 had the best possible outcome. Western Lakes Fire District emergency crews responded to a call at an Oconomowoc home at about 4 a.m. and delivered a healthy baby girl. According to Western Lakes Fire Chief Brad Bowen, the mother and baby were taken to Waukesha Memorial Hospital, where both were listed in good condition.

Arson charges against former Madison man over car fires downtown

A former Madison man is charged with two felony counts of arson and other crimes, after two cars in downtown Madison were set on fire last month.24-year old Darryn Taylor of Whitmore Lake, Michigan remains free on $3,000 bail, after a Monday Dane County court appearance. A criminal complaint against Taylor states surveillance video around the time of the early morning, Feb.

Fire causes ‘substantial damage’ to Fond du Lac garage, cause electrical in nature

Firefighters on Monday night, March 26 responded to the scene of a garage fire on Maple Avenue near Ray Street in Fond Du Lac. The call came in shortly before midnight. Upon arrival, crews saw smoke coming from the building and made a fire attack on the garage. The fire was contained to the garage, but not before substantial damage occurred.

Overnight house fire in Brown County

VIDEO: No one was hurt after an overnight house fire in Brown County. It broke out around 1 a.m. Tuesday at a home in Langes Corners, which is near Denmark. It started out as a garage fire, but quickly spread to the home on Steves Cheese Road. "We have extensive damage to the first floor of the home and we have smoke and water damage extensively, second floor has a lot of smoke damage.

Rhode Island firefighters sue city in federal court alleging fair labor violations in overtime

Firefighters are suing the town in federal court alleging that East Greenwich is shorting them on overtime by violating the Fair Labor Standards Act. The suit was filed Friday in U.S. District Court against the town and Finance Director Linda Dykeman. It asks the court to award back pay and legal fees and to declare that the town “willfully and intentionally violated” its obligations to firefighters.

Update: Pregnant Florida firefighter granted light duty assignment

A pregnant Indian River County firefighter, who has been pleading for months for light duty, has finally been given a light duty assignment. Nicole Morris, now 33-weeks pregnant, started asking Fire Chief John King to help her better protect her unborn baby just months into her pregnancy. She originally was not asking for light duty, but the ability to max out the number of shifts she could exchange with other firefighters, wanting to work for them early on in her pregnancy, so they could work for her, in exchange, after she gives birth.

Colleagues recall the career of New York Battalion Chief

Perhaps no other family had such a long run with the Watertown Fire Department as the Lachenauers. Over a 76-year span, the department was served by the family — first by Chief George W. Lachenauer, then later by his two sons, David M. and Ted. That long reign came to an end a few short weeks ago. Battalion Chief David Lachenauer remained on the roster until March 6, when he officially retired.

Former Florida assistant fire chief charged with stealing thousands of dollars

A former Indian County assistant fire chief was arrested Monday morning and charged with stealing thousands of dollars from the county. Sheriff Deryl Loar said Brian Burkeen, 55, of Fellsmere, used a county credit card to purchase hundreds of tires, valued at at least $300,000. He would then sell the tires and pocket the cash according to the investigation.

Onalaska Town Board backs agreement with La Crosse Fire Department

The Onalaska Town Board was in full agreement regarding a proposed agreement between the Holmen Area and La Crosse fire departments for equipment servicing. At its March 13 meeting, the board voted to recommend the Holmen Area Fire District Board Association partner with the LCFD to do mechanical work on HAFD’s vehicles and other equipment.

Semis that caught fire outside east Madison bakery cause $32K in damage, fire officials say

Semitrailerss that caught fire outside an east Madison bakery early Monday caused thousands of dollars in damage to the building, fire officials said. The Madison Fire Department said crews responded to a semi fire at about 2:15 a.m. outside the Bimbo Bakeries in the 3400 block of East Washington Avenue.

Nobody hurt in Far West Side house fire, Madison Fire Department says

Nobody was injured Sunday afternoon in a fire that damaged the exterior of a home on Madison's Far West Side. The fire was reported at about 4:15 p.m. in the 2300 block of Mica Road, the Madison Fire Department said. Responding units could see smoke a block or two away from the single-family residence.
