Governor orders flags to half-staff Friday to honor fallen Madison firefighter

Gov. Scott Walker ordered Thursday that all flags be flown at half-staff Friday in honor of Madison firefighter and paramedic Richard Garner. Garner, 29, collapsed suddenly Sunday morning shortly after completing his shift. He joined the Madison Fire Department in 2012, and served as a firefighter and EMT at station 5 until moving to station 10 and becoming a paramedic in 2017.

Oshkosh Police and Fire Commission picks 4 finalists for fire chief position

There are four people in the running to become the city's new fire chief. The Oshkosh Police and Fire Commission selected four finalists after a nationwide search, the city announced Thursday. The commission has set an open house-style meet and greet for 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, at the Oshkosh Convention Center, according to the city.

Follow Up: Casual phone call sparks $20,000 donation to Wales-Genesee Fire Department

VIDEO: What started as mysterious phone call ended with an anonymous $20,000 donation to the Wales-Genesee Fire Department. Wales-Genesee Fire Chief Jim Moon took a call in mid-December 2017 from someone asking about donations. "I had gotten a phone call from a gentleman asking me how he could donate to the Wales Fire Department," Moon said.

Crews investigate potentially suspicious house fire in Morrison

The Brown County Arson Task Force is investigating a potentially suspicious house fire in the Town of Morrison, according to officers. No one was home when the fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters are not sure how many people live at the home. Deputies said there are no injuries or deaths related to this fire.

Minnesota firefighter dies hours after 2 emergency calls

Firefighters from around the state are expected to gather this weekend for the funeral of a southern Minnesota firefighter who died in the line of duty hours after answering two emergency calls last week. Timothy Royce, 58, responded with fellow Mapleton firefighters to a traffic crash and then a medical call Thursday.

Off-duty Houston firefighter helps save man's life in Facebook Live shooting

A Houston firefighter says his instincts from training immediately kicked in when he was off-duty Easter Sunday and helping to save a man's life. Chas Martin is still emotionally and mentally shaken from the gas station shooting that was on Facebook Live. California firefighters start, end careers together

On the same day in June 1980, Phil Hadley and Terry Lamb were hired to work the hand crew of the Ventura County Fire Department. Last week, the two retired together, ending their final shifts at 8 a.m. Thursday in Simi Valley. Both are 55. “It’s a blessing working with your best friend each day,” Hadley said Wednesday, hours before the end of their last shift.

Osceola community rushes to Crystal Ball’s aid during barn fire

Area fire departments, passers by and locals rushed to Crystal Ball Farms Organic Dairy in Osceola last Thursday to help mitigate the damage of a barn fire. Although the barn burned to the ground, creamery manager Jessi Fouks said the outcome would have been worse if a passerby had not stopped to alert her to the fire.

Fire damages home near 39th and Galena in Milwaukee, cause under investigation

Firefighters on Wednesday morning, April 4 responded to the scene of a house fire in Milwaukee. It happened shortly before 5 a.m. in the area of 39th and Galena. Officials say one person was transported for medical help. At this time, it is unclear if that person was hurt directly by the fire or if a medical issue flared up because of the fire.

Former New York fire commissioner dad, firefighter son settle suit against department for $900,000

A former New Hyde Park fire commissioner and his firefighter son received a $900,000 settlement from the fire department after they said the department damaged their reputations by having them wrongfully arrested on theft charges. For Michael Dolan and his son, Michael Jr., the settlement announced Tuesday marked the culmination of a six-year legal battle to clear their names.
