New documents present new insight in Mosinee Fire Department resignations

VIDEO: Records released to News 9 Wednesday provide a potential backstory to the abrupt resignations of Mosinee Fire Chief Doug Jennings and Deputy Chief Emily Dobeck. They both stepped down back in January, and were connected professionally before entering their roles in Mosinee. Newly released documents obtained through an open records request contain a personal statement, as well as letters to the mayor of Mosinee regarding complaints about Jennings and Dobeck.

DNR pilots get bird's-eye view of wildfires, rising waters

A propeller spun with a rush of noise, and Mike Callahan gently guided his small single-engine plane, a Cessna Skywagon 185, toward a runway at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. Small explosions heard during Marathon County structure fire

VIDEO: A two-car garage burned to the ground Tuesday in southwestern Marathon County and investigators have not been able to determine a cause. "It was fully engulfed when we got there," said Stratford Fire Chief Bill Griesbach. Fire crews responded just before 11:20 a.m. to the fire on Kuehlman Lane in the Town of Green Valley, southeast of Stratford.

Chippewa County Board lauds dispatcher who won award

A Chippewa County dispatcher has won an award for telecommunicator of the year. Wade Davis was given the award by Wisconsin Public Safety Communications. Davis was honored at the Chippewa County Board meeting on Tuesday, and the board gave him a standing ovation. Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk said Davis is a hard worker and liked by everyone in the department.

Update: Bodies found in home west of Neenah identified as Jeremy Wallenfang and Ashley Mielke

VIDEO: The bodies found last week in a burned home west of Neenah have been identified as 36-year-old Jeremy Wallenfang, of Neenah, and 27-year-old Ashley Mielke, of Appleton. The cause of death has yet to be determined because both bodies were "significantly degraded" by the fire, the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

Florida city argues fire chiefs' firings valid even if underlying investigation was "tainted"

The city of Pensacola has motioned to dismiss a discrimination lawsuit filed by a former city fire chief. In late 2016, Joseph Glover filed a federal lawsuit against the city and the mayor alleging he was investigated, suspended and fired in retaliation for filing a discrimination complaint. In a filing last week, attorneys for the city called for a summary judgement in their favor.

Colorado firefighters union to get council vote on collective bargaining ballot item

Past IAFC Fire Chief of the Year winners reflect on Chief Bruno's legacy, moving the fire service forward

Nebraska firefighter's failing heart may heal with new technology

CHI's Nebraska Heart Hospital is celebrating two milestones, and they have to do with a Nebraska firefighter. He came to them with a failing heart, and now doctors said not only is his heart fixed for now, but it could heal itself so he wouldn't need a transplant. The staff at NHH said it could work on future heart patients, too.

FDNY determines cause of fire that killed firefighter on Harlem movie set

Authorities have revealed the cause of a fire on a Harlem movie set that killed a firefighter in March. Fire Marshals determined that heat from a boiler ventilation pipe ignited nearby combustible materials and caused the fire in the basement of a building on St. Nicholas Avenue. Firefighter Michael Davidson was trapped and killed.

Motorcycle crash survivor questions why Milwaukee EMS crews didn't attend to driver, who died

Proposed 82-unit apartment complex in Beaver Dam features no sprinkler system

The Beaver Dam Common Council on Monday approved a conceptual design for a new 82-unit apartment complex that has drawn concerns from the fire chief over its lack of sprinkler systems and access points, allowing the project to move forward. The new complex would be near Spring Street, north of the Spring Lake apartment complex near Kohl’s and between two older subdivisions.

2 rescued from roof in fire at Madison apartment building, officials say

The Madison Fire Department is investigating an apartment fire in the 200 block of North Street where two people were rescued from roof areas, officials said. The Madison Police Department said around midnight Tuesday, officers and firefighters responded to a fire at an eight-unit residential building operated by the nonprofit organization Porchlight.

Virginia firefighters and sheriff's deputies say they're not paid fairly

FDNY lieutenant makes history as first woman to lead elite rescue unit

Trailblazing FDNY Lt. Adrienne Walsh is making history — again. Walsh, 51, on Monday became the first woman to serve in a position of rank in one of five of the department's elite rescue companies. Serving as a lieutenant in Rescue Company 1, which covers Manhattan, Walsh is joining one of five highly technical emergency response units that race to large fires or other high-risk situations where specialized training, skills and equipment are required.

Fire departments, desperate for volunteers, get creative

Michigan departments still reeling from accident that left fire chief in hospital, wife dead

St. Joseph County Undersheriff Mark Lillywhite said 66-year-old Patricia Frye was killed instantly around 7:30 p.m. Saturday when her motorcycle was rear-ended by the driver of a minivan while stopped at the intersection of Broadway and U.S.131 in Three Rivers. Her husband, 55-year-old Mike Frye, chief of Fabius & Park Townships Fire Department, was also struck and airlifted to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo and is currently listed in critical condition.
