South Shore Fire Department welcomes new rig, chief warns about other equipment needs

At Mount Pleasant Day on Saturday, the South Shore Fire Department showed off its newest vehicle, a new aerial ladder with capabilities beyond what the department’s current vehicles can do. South Shore Fire Chief Robert Stedman also showed off the ladder to the Village Board on Sept. 10; he said the new truck replaces an older ladder from 1992 and “to say it was worn out would be an understatement.

Missouri fire chief cites harassment, bullying as reason for resignation

Citing a campaign of harassment, antagonism and bullying, Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District Chief Dennis P. Reilly, is stepping down from the position he has held since 2012. As Hurricane Roared, North Carolina Fire Station Burned

On Sunday, Fire Chief Teddy Stamatis had just left his home to go shopping when a fire call came in for a working fire at the Macclesfield Rural Fire Department's station. On arrival Stamatis found heavy fire showing in the firehouse. He was able to get one of the apparatus bay doors open and remove one of his tankers to safety.

Unique Ohio fire department partnership connects seniors to services so they can remain in their homes

Norwich Township Fire Chief Jeff Warren was happy to be wrong. He thought the number of people enrolled in his fire department’s collaborative program with National Church Residences was around 100. Actually, it’s already grown to 120. Not far off, but he still underestimated it, which meant more people were getting help than he figured.

FDNY EMS workers, elected officials call for mayor to stop opposing paid sick leave for 9/11 responders

More than 17 years after the Sept. 11 attacks, EMTs sickened at the World Trade Center are still fighting for unlimited sick time due to resistance, they say, from Mayor de Blasio. Lawmakers and union leaders ripped de Blasio Monday for his opposition to legislation that would expand unlimited sick time — already available to NYPD officers and FDNY firefighters, and to first responders from outside the city — to another about 4,000 city workers, including FDNY EMS workers.

Oprah Winfrey honors first responders as new USPS stamp is unveiled

First responders were honored Friday at a U.S. Postal Service stamp ceremony in Montecito. The firefighters, law enforcement officers and emergency medical personnel who assisted during the Thomas Fire and Jan. 9 mudslide were specifically recognized as a new, commemorative "First Responder" Forever stamp was dedicated.

Lincoln County, firefighters take efforts to prevent troublesome suicide numbers

VIDEO: A decade ago, some of the highest rates of suicide in the state came from Lincoln County. Those numbers have improved slightly since then. But death by suicide is still a major concern in the area. A billboard in the center of Merrill serves as a reminder. It directs people to call the Hopeline, a free crisis prevention line.

Wind Lake names new fire chief

The business of firefighting has changed a lot since Don Catenacci, Wind Lake’s new part-time fire chief, started firefighting in 1977. “My biggest issue is the same with every other volunteer fire department: it’s retaining and maintaining volunteers,” said Catenacci, who is Wind Lake’s first paid chief.

Hazmat crews respond to Kenosha County Walmart after employees sickened

It was a scary situation at the Walmart in Salem after three workers had to be taken to the hospital. It happened Sunday morning at the location on Brumback Boulevard. The employees got sick after spending time in a cooler. A hazmat crew came in and evacuated the store while they checked it for dangerous gasses.

Pancake breakfast raises funds for Chippewa fire station equipment

VIDEO: A couple hundred people in the Town of Lafayette spent their Sunday morning at the fire station to enjoy some pancakes. The Chippewa Fire District Lafayette Station Number 3 held its annual pancake breakfast to raise funds for the station. Although the pancake breakfast is a long standing tradition, this is the first year it was held at the newly remodeled fire station.

Fire chief: No need to panic about future of Milton fire station

Milton’s outdated fire station has sparked a lot of discussion about how to serve the fire district’s 90 square miles, but a firm plan for the future remains hazy. The man in charge of prodding the process along sees no reason to panic, however. Randy Banker, fire chief for Janesville and Milton, is developing a process to generate estimates on several options, including a new or renovated fire station, a new station shared with Janesville or a combination of the two.

New York chief's order keeps volunteers out of burning buildings

A city firefighter's decision to alert the state that volunteers are behind on mandated training prompted the fire chief to forbid the crew of 18 volunteers from rushing into burning buildings. "The training will be upgraded," Mayor Daniel Dwyer said. "We will do it in a couple of weeks." Dwyer said a "disgruntled" firefighter contacted the state's Public Employees Safety Health Bureau to complain about the lack of training, which led to Chief Bill Hummel's decision to sideline the volunteers.

Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Colorado Springs honors next wave of 9/11 victims

Sixteen years after the 343 New York City firefighters who died in the collapse of the twin towers on 9/11 were honored at an annual ceremony in Colorado Springs, another wave of victims of the terrorist attack is being added to the memorial wall. Nineteen of the 271 union firefighters whose names were read out at this year’s Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial on Saturday in Memorial Park died of illnesses or conditions associated with the aftermath of the attack when firefighters were called upon to dig through the toxic rubble at what came to be known as ground zero, at first hoping to rescue survivors, then hoping to at least find remains.

Utah firefighter’s death caused by retardant drop from 747

A Utah firefighter battling the largest wildfire in California history was killed last month when thousands of gallons of flame-suppressing liquid were dropped from a Boeing 747 mistakenly flying only 100 feet (30 meters) above the treetops, according to an official report Friday. Follow Up: Off-duty Massachusetts firefighter raced to shut off neighbor's gas amid explosions

It's one of the few bright spots to come out of Thursday's disaster in Lawrence. As his neighbors were evacuating, off-duty Lawrence firefighter Lt. Dave Amero ran house to house, shutting off the gas. Amero said he realized there was a problem when his wife told him their house reeked of gas. "I just started running around, shutting off meters.

Follow Up: West Allis Firefighter reunites with family of woman he performed CPR on while being attacked

The family of Arlene Wendler is forever grateful to West Allis firefighter, Chad Staszak. “I can’t think him enough for being there to try to save my mom’s life…I just appreciate it,” said Joyce Gebert. Last month at West Bend GERMANfest, Wendler went into cardiac arrest. Staszak, who was off-duty, performed CPR on her.
