EMS reach is stretching Washington agency budgets

The mounting costs of providing emergency medical services in rural Asotin County could lead to a new EMS levy proposal in places such as Anatone, Cloverland and the Snake River corridor. At Monday’s Asotin County Commission meeting, Lewiston Fire Chief Travis Myklebust and Asotin County Fire Chief Noel Hardin said first responders are getting more calls to areas outside the boundaries of the Asotin County Fire District.

It's 'absurd': Janesville firefighter union files complaint against city over contract dispute

The union for the Janesville Fire Department has filed a complaint against the city of Janesville with the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission over a contract dispute. Janesville Fire Fighters Local 580 posted about the complaint in a Facebook post Friday, saying the city has threatened to increase firefighters' health insurance by 400 percent after a dispute over parking.

Mount Pleasant EMS station given the go-ahead

The Village Board on Monday approved a contract to build a new emergency medical service station for the South Shore Fire Department for $1.09 million, more than double the original estimate of $500,000. The station is to be constructed in the northeast portion of the village near the intersection of Emmertsen Road and Spring Street.

Oregon Fire, EMS to receive federal grant

The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded the Oregon Area Fire/EMS District a grant to retrofit the fire station's apparatus bay. According to a release, $116,100 was awarded as part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program for fiscal year 2017. The release said the money will retrofit the fire station's apparatus bay with an emissions disposal system that will catch diesel emissions and send them outside.

New Sun Prairie fire department equipment OK’d

Acting on a recommendation from the Committee of the Whole, the Sun Prairie City Council on Sept. 18 approved the early purchase of a Rapid Attack Vehicle by the Sun Prairie Fire Department so it can guarantee 2018 pricing and be ready for next fall. The Rapid Attack Vehicle (RAV) will be one of three vehicles that will replace the department’s Squad 5, a heavy rescue vehicle.

Denver firetruck gets stuck in sinkhole at water main break

Residents of a quiet neighborhood woke up to a strange sight Sunday morning after the back end of a Denver Fire Department truck was swallowed up by a sinkhole. It happened just after 6 a.m. at the corner of Zuni and Louisiana when a fire crew was headed to the scene of a reported water main break. Between the 12-inch water main break and the sunken truck, nearby residents found themselves scrambling to make sense of the scene.

California firefighters: Battalion chief secretly photographed, videotaped union members

A La Verne Fire battalion chief secretly took more than 250 videos, 1,500 photographers and kept a 235-page file of notes, some of which included conversations union members had with their wives, the La Verne Firefighters Association alleges in a new claim filed against the city last week. The association, engaged in a legal battle with the city the last 10 months, alleges Battalion Chief Michael Thompson began his surveillance of union members in the summer of 2017 with the intent to gather evidence for disciplinary action against them.

Staffing cuts made at New Hampshire fire stations as city, union struggle to reach contract agreement

As the firefighters’ union and the Queen City try to reach a contract, cuts have been made across the board at Manchester fire stations. In order to avoid layoffs and shutting down stations, Manchester Fire Chief Dan Goonan made the call to cut back from 46 firefighters per shift down to 37. Goonan said he had to cut some crews from four members down to three.

Woman sentenced 74 years for arson, murder of two Missouri firefighters

The woman who ignited gallons of flammable liquids in her nail salon looking to get an insurance check but ended up killing two Kansas City firefighters was sentenced Friday to 74 years in prison. The stiff sentence for Thu Hong Nguyen was punishment for causing what Assistant Jackson County Prosecutor Dan Nelson called “pain that is real, is ragged and is ongoing” for the families and friends of firefighters John V.

Illinois firefighters to help battle human sex trafficking

Fire, believed to have started on fryer, damages McDonald’s in Wauwatosa

No one was hurt in a fire at the McDonald’s restaurant near 124th and Capitol in Wauwatosa early Sunday morning, Sept. 23. Fire officials responded around 5:30 a.m., and found smoke showing from the roof, with a “light haze” inside. The restaurant was closed at the time, but an employee opening the business noticed the fire and called 911.

Marshfield Fire Rescue considers adding positions

The Marshfield Police and Fire Commission has approved three additional full-time positions for the city's Fire Department. WDLB Radio in Marshfield reports the commision unanimously passed the proposal on to the city's Finance, Budget, and Personnel committee last week. The proposal comes at a time when the Fire Department has been stretched very thin, according to Mayor Bob McManus.

Wisconsin Public Service restoring power across central Wisconsin

Wisconsin Public Service has restored power to thousands of households early Friday morning following a round of storms that knocked out power across central Wisconsin Thursday night. As of 7:45 a.m. Friday, more than 3,900 people were without power. Just under 1,300 people remain without electricity.

State officials unveil $2 million disaster recovery microloan program after flooding

In order to help small businesses, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation unveiled a $2 million Disaster Recovery Microloan Program last week. The program will provide an immediate source of funds for necessary restoration work and related expenses, a release said. According to the release, the loan program is available in all 72 counties, but WEDC is going to start working with areas of the state that were most impacted by flooding.

Iowa firefighters resign over public safety officer program

For about three years the city of Cedar Falls has begun using dual-trained public safety officers — PSOs — to help fight fires. There has been push back. Now two veteran firefighters have quit the force. James Cook worked as a full-time firefighter in Cedar Falls for 12 years, but left this month due to safety concerns.

Florida firefighters sue city, say they were retaliated against for testifying in discrimination case

Two Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department employees are suing the City of Jacksonville, saying they were retaliated against for testifying in a racial discrimination case. That complaint was filed by JFRD Capt. Eric Mitchell. The employees said they were told they need to "get rid of" Mitchell. This isn't the first time JFRD has faced allegations of discrimination and hostile work environments concerning African-American firefighters.
