Pioneering San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White to retire next spring

San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White, the first woman ever to lead the department and the longest-serving big-city fire chief in the country, told her department on Monday she’s retiring. She has agreed to stay on the job until spring to give Mayor London Breed time to find her replacement. Her ideal retirement date, she said, is May 5, 2019, a “small tribute” to the late Mayor Ed Lee, who would have turned 67 that day.

Oregon firefighters healing from emotional trauma after shooting at house fire

The first firefighters to arrive on scene of a house fire in Springfield where they were ambushed by a gunman are on leave while a Peer Support Team helps them and the department heal from the trauma. Battalion Chief Mike Caven with the Eugene Springfield Fire Department is praising those five firefighters for their efforts, calling them heroes.

Pennsylvania city needs 30 days to provide fire chief's son's application

Citing the “extensive nature” of the request, the City of Scranton needs 30 days to decide if it will provide the employment application of the city fire chief’s son. The Times-Tribune requested a copy of Jacob DeSarno’s employment application earlier this month through the Right To Know Law, after the applicant’s father, Fire Chief Patrick DeSarno, directed the paper to do so.

New fire trucks likely coming to Ohio department amid concerns about temporary station closings

Toledo firefighters worry they might have to temporarily close a firehouse if one more back-up fire engine winds up in the repair shop, but councilmen hope a slight budget reconfiguration will help alleviate those fears. Racine woman killed, husband injured after tree falls on car

A Racine woman was killed and her husband was seriously injured after a tree fell on their moving vehicle Saturday morning in Franksville. The tree came down while 51-year old William Martin and 52-year old Michelle Martin were driving by, investigators said. The accident occurred on 4 Mile Rd. near Nicholson Rd.

Winds spread house fire in Howard

Firefighters in Howard say strong winds pushed an attached garage fire into a home. Howard Fire responded to the incident around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Everyone in the home had escaped, but there may have been a cat still inside. Howard Fire said wind conditions combined with the type of construction of the building made this a difficult fire to put out.

Garage in Buchanan Damaged in Fire

A garage has been severely damaged following a fire on Sunday. The Town of Buchanan Fire and Rescue say it happened just after noon. Once fire crews arrived, fire was coming out of the roof of the entire house. Although the fire had already spread to the attic above the house, firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before it spread any further.

Car crashes into Sheboygan building, sets business on fire

A car crashed through the front of a building early Sunday morning setting the business on fire. According to the Sheboygan Police, around 2:25 AM the car driven by a 27-year-old man blew through a stop sign at S 24th Street and Union Avenue, crashing through the front entrance of Watson’s Vending and Foodservice.

Iowa fire chief dies while responding to combine fire

Florida governor issues ultimatum to Verizon: Give me a plan to restore service, and treat customers fairly

Rick Scott issued another rebuke of Verizon, telling the cell provider in a terse press release that he expects the company to give him a plan today to restore service to the areas hit by Hurricane Michael, and that all cell providers should waive bills for October. The press release was addressed to all cell phone providers, but it singled out Verizon, which has struggled to restore service in Bay County, where Michael made landfall.

Controversial FDNY official removed from senior position

A top FDNY official in charge of assessing aspiring firefighters has been hosed out of that role, The Post has learned. Margaret “Peg” Quinn-Puppa, deputy director of the FDNY’s candidate investigation division, “is assuming other duties in human resources,” said department spokesman Jim Long. Eagle Point Volunteer Fire Department holds open house

On Saturday, the Eagle Point Volunteer Fire Department in Chippewa Falls held an open house to show their support for their community. The Eagle Point Volunteer Fire Department is comprised of 22 individuals consisting of EMRs, EMTs, first responders and volunteer fire fighters. Most fire departments located in less populated areas are staffed by mostly volunteers and many of the staffers are on call 24/7.

Firefighters respond to two Onalaska house fires

VIDEO: The Onalaska Fire Department responded to two house fires shortly after 7 p.m., Saturday. Firefighters were called to 203 14th Avenue in Onalaska for a garage that was on fire. The fire spread from the garage to the house, extending to a second house next door. No one was hurt but both houses are now uninhabitable.

Fire truck on order for Village of Osceola

Although it might not arrive for almost a year, a new fire truck is in the works for the Village of Osceola. The village’s board of trustees approved the purchase Tuesday, Oct. 9. The combined pumper and aerial truck, which will replace the fire department’s 1972 truck, will be built to specifications by Osceola-based Custom Fire Apparatus and finished within 300 days, according to the contract.
