Douglas County is joining a statewide effort to persuade the governor and Wisconsin Legislature to provide funding to upgrade emergency 911 systems for the digital age using revenue generated by fees paid by telephone users. According to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, the police and fire protection fee is charged to consumers for each voice communications connection with an assigned telephone number including landlines, cellular phones and communication services provided by a VoIP connection.

October is National Fire Prevention Month and Oct. 7-13 was National Fire Prevention Week, and Dells area fire departments are partnering with the Nation Fire Protection Association to promote fire prevention. More than 12 Sheboygan area fire agencies responded to a house fire near Elkhart Lake Tuesday night. The fire broke out just after 5:45 p.m. at W5666 Keystone Road, according to a press release from the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office. No residents of the home or firefighters were injured during the blaze, according to the sheriff's office.

Four firefighter/paramedics in Naperville started working eight-hour shifts this week as part of a staffing plan designed to get more people on duty when they're needed most.
The typical firefighter's hours are 24 hours on the job, 48 hours off, and that's not changing at the large Naperville department, which operates 10 stations with a daily minimum of 42 firefighter/paramedics on the job.

VIDEO - Three people were injured in an accident involving an FDNY ambulance in the Bronx that was on the way to a call. That ambulance then slammed into an optical store.
An FDNY official said it happened around 7:30 a.m. on East Fordham Road at Elm Place. The ambulance collided with a Honda Civic before careening into the store.

As a career firefighter in Washington, D.C., and a 32-year volunteer with the Independent Hose Co. in Frederick, Jeff Scire has run into his fair share of burning buildings.
He usually has close to 50 pounds of safety and breathing equipment to protect him, but none of it was available Monday afternoon as Scire found himself facing a smoke-filled basement less than a mile from his home on Indian Springs Road.
