On a frigid early December morning, Travis Akins stood at the front of a conference room in the county’s Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courthouse and took a deep breath, preparing to tell a group of parents something they might not be ready to hear. “We’re not going to baby your sons,” said Akins, a Chesterfield native and founder of Growth Through Opportunity, a 16-week program that provides young adults who have a variety of physical and/or intellectual disabilities with hands-on learning experiences, skill- and confidence-building and socialization through training alongside local first responders.

City in Michigan to start own fire department

The city of Grand Blanc will start its own fire department later this year. Beginning July 25, the city will provide services to its residents, a departure from a decades-long partnership with Grand Blanc Township. “Our primary concern when making this decision is the City’s safety and protection with care and respect,” reads a statement issued Wednesday, April 10 after the council’s vote to approve the move.

Backyard electrical fire caught on camera in Grafton

High winds in Grafton knocked down part of a homeowner's tree onto power lines Thursday morning, causing sparks and flames to fly out. WisDOT cameras show start of White Oaks apartments fire in Bayside

VIDEO: The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) released new video on Thursday, April 11, showing a large fire at the White Oaks apartment complex in Bayside. The blaze happened early Saturday, March 30. The video shows flames in the distance, above the treeline. North Shore Fire Department Chief Robert Whitaker says if the timestamp on this video matches the time of their first emergency call, the fire was already rolling over the rooftop before they dispatched emergency responders.

Rhodes-Conway will honor Judge Doyle Square contract, vague on providing funding for more ambulances

Port Washington: A gift to a fire department in need

The fire department on Madeline Island in northern Wisconsin is getting a new tanker truck, courtesy of the Port Washington Fire Department. It’s a much-needed donation approved last week by the Port Washington Common Council. The Madeline Island department suffered a “catastrophic loss” when an explosion and subsequent fire in early March destroyed the fire station and all the equipment stored there, Port Washington Fire Chief Mark Mitchell said.

Port Washington panel likes two Hwy. 33 sites for new firehouse

The Port Washington Fire Station Task Force on Tuesday narrowed its preferred sites for a new firehouse to two locations along Highway 33 west of Highway LL. Texas chief lays out plan for Prop B 'pay parity' that doesn't result in layoffs

Bill passed in Arkansas to protect firefighters with cancer

Arkansas legislators passed Crump’s Law on Monday, granting municipal firefighters across the state an extra six months of paid sick leave when they are being treated for cancer contracted on the job. Members of El Dorado Professional Firefighters Local 1704, a labor organization representing 90 percent of the paid firefighters in El Dorado, lobbied at the state Capitol in February for the bill’s passage.

California city council approves deal to boost firefighters’ pay

Santa Rosa is on track to settle a 2-year-old lawsuit over firefighters’ overtime pay after the City Council approved a deal Tuesday to boost pay for 118 unionized firefighters. The council unanimously approved without discussion Tuesday a deal to increase salaries, expand pension contributions and provide one-time lump-sum payments of at least $5,000 to firefighters while reducing the city’s maximum health insurance contributions to those employees.

Two Trailers Considered Total Loss Following Brotherstown Fire

Two trailers are considered complete losses following a fire in Brothertown today. According to the Calumet Fire Chief, officials were dispatched to the trailer park around 2:40 this afternoon. Upon arrival, one trailer was completely engulfed in flames, which spread to two other units. As a result, six people have been displaced from their homes.

Construction bids for Greenville fire station total $6.2 million

Construction of the town's new 22,000-square-foot fire station will begin early next week and last eight months. Bids for the project totaled $6.2 million. The budget approved by voters in an August 2018 referendum was $6.5 million. Town Administrator Joel Gregozeski said officials had been concerned with the bidding environment because of a large amount of work in the construction industry.

Controlled burn gets out of control and scorches 40 acres in Summit, forcing closure of Highway 67

A controlled burn by a property owner in the village of Summit jumped into a corn field and resulted in about 40 burnt acres. According to Western Lakes Fire District Chief Brad Bowen, the incident took place in the afternoon of April 6 on Highway 67 between Genesee Lake Road and Summit Moors Drive.

Residents displaced after Ashwaubenon duplex fire

FDNY firefighter killed by roadside bomb in Afghanistan

A decorated city firefighter and Marine who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan was dedicated to being the best man he could be, his heartbroken father said Tuesday. Firefighter Christopher Slutman, a father of three and a U.S. Marine reservist assigned to Ladder 27 in the Bronx, was killed Monday during a roadside bombing near the Bagram Air Base, north of the Afghan capital.
