Dryer fire causes $25,000 in damages to Green Bay hotel

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department credits an automatic sprinkler system with containing a fire that broke out at the Hilton Garden Inn. Crews say they were called to the hotel just after 1 am Sunday. When they arrived, firefighters say they found moderate smoke on the first floor and saw occupants evacuating the building.

Coon Valley firefighters believe lightning strike led to house fire

The Coon Valley Fire Department got a call for a house fire on Highway 14/61 between Shelby and Coon Valley at 6:57 a.m. Saturday. The Coon Valley Fire Department's assistant chief, Ken Phillips, said the fire was still under investigation as of Saturday morning, but the likely cause was a lightning strike that followed wires to the house.

Cooking fire causes minor damage in Appleton

The Appleton Fire Department was called to the 3100 block of E. Newberry Street around 9:30 Thursday night for reports of a kitchen fire. Firefighters were told on the way that the fire was a cooking oil fire and had been partially extinguished. They found smoke in the building when they arrived. They contained the smoke and confirmed that the fire had been extinguished by a resident with a fire extinguisher.

Unsung 9/11 Heroes Finally Get Their Own Memorial in New York

Every year on Sept. 11, relatives and friends of people killed at the World Trade Center return to the memorial that fills the footprints of the towers. The mayor, even presidential candidates, have joined them as the victims’ names are read. Many run their fingers over some of the thousands of names etched in bronze and wedge stems of flowers into the letters.

Surge in fire department staffing across California county as new funding kicks in

Massachusetts Town To Fired Firefighter: Sorry

Brookline will issue an apology to Gerald Alston, the former Brookline firefighter who the town fired after he came forward to report a supervisor had left a voicemail with a racial epithet on it. Town Meeting members discussed at length whether to issue a formal apology before the vote. Some argued it could hurt the town, which is still facing litigation from Alston.

Kewaskum bank significantly damaged in fire

The Westbury Bank in Kewaskum was seriously damaged in a fire Thursday morning. Fire crews say they were called to the scene near Roseland and Fond Du Lac after workers smelled smoke around 9:46 a.m. Employees got out of the building safely and firefighers were able to put out the fire. The roof of the bank is partially collapsed.

Excavator strikes gas main causing 'substantial gas leak,' Madison fire officials say

An excavator struck a natural gas main on Madison's far west side Wednesday afternoon, officials said. The Madison Fire Department said crews responded at about 12:45 p.m. to the 9900 block of White Fox Lane after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting the smell of natural gas in the area. Firefighters created a perimeter around the leak, evacuated all construction workers from the danger zone and ordered all equipment to be shut off, officials said.

Milwaukee officials identify victim of fiery crash on Highway 145 near Park Place Avenueoff-ramp

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office identified on Thursday, May 30 as 61-year-old Todd Miller of Milwaukee. The wreck happened shortly before noon on Monday, May 27 on Highway 145 near the Park Place Avenue off-ramp. The vehicle apparently struck a barrier head-on before catching fire. Milwaukee firefighters were called out to the scene to extinguish the fire.

New Jersey governor voices support for unions during firefighter convention in Atlantic City

Fire Protection District in Colorado To Settle Retiree Lawsuit For $1.2M

Kentucky fire department at lowest number of firefighters in years

One extra body makes a difference when responding to a fire. Paducah’s fire chief says it takes everyone on a shift to respond to a fire. A report by the International Association of Firefighters, a union representing firefighters in the U.S. and Canada, says the city of Paducah is recommended to have 24 people per shift.

Firefighters Better Able to Track On-The-Job Exposures to Deadly Carcinogens and Other Toxins

Firefighters on the front lines protecting their communities now have a valuable tool for recording and providing evidence of work-related exposures to help protect them against deadly cancers and other occupational hazards in the fire service. The new National Fire Operations Reporting System (NFORS) Exposure Tracker is now available as an app for firefighters, paramedics or officers to create a personal diary for logging exposure and incident details in a private, encrypted and secure online environment.
