A national organization says it will pay off the home mortgage of the family of Appleton firefighter Mitch Lundgaard.
Lundgaard was killed in a shooting last month at the transit center in downtown Appleton.
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is paying off the Lundgaard family's mortgage.

When 9-year old aspiring wildlife animal rescuer Zoe Adkins saw a bunch of ducklings and their mother squawking, squeaking and clearly in distress across from Sussex's Madeline Park, she said, “Mom, we have to stop.”
As Zoe and her mother, Kristina, watched, they saw one duckling fall through a storm sewer grate and pulled over to help.

Firefighters believe an improperly discarded cigarette likely caused an apartment fire on Madison's east side, according to a release by the city's fire department.
The third-story apartment is located along the 3300 block of Packers Avenue. On Tuesday evening, a neighbor called 911 after noticing a small fire on the deck of the apartment, said Cynthia Schuster a public information officer with the fire department.

Under legislation pending in Albany, city firefighters would be granted a five-year post-retirement period in which they could revise their retirement option if they developed cancer that may be linked to carcinogens they were exposed to on the job.
Epidemiological studies have established the firefighting-cancer link for several years.

The Boise Fire Department is celebrating a new milestone as it welcomes the first female fire captain.
Ashley Rosenbaum is a 12-year-member of the Boise Fire Department. Rosenbaum will be field promoted at Station 17 on June 26 at 11:30 a.m. She began her career with Boise fire in 2007, was promoted to Firefighter 1 in 2008, Firefighter 2 in 2009 and Firefighter 3 in 2011.

Six people are dead, including four children, in a house fire on County Highway DD in Pickerel.
A 34-year-old woman, a 32-year-old man, a 10-month-old girl, a 1 1/2-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy.
Eight people were in the house when the fire started early Tuesday morning. Two people escaped.

Madison fire investigators are trying to determine if an electrical problem caused $75,000 worth of damage to a railroad car.
According to a release by the Madison Fire Department, firefighters noted heavy black smoke coming from the end of a passenger train car as they responded to the rail yard on Johnson Street Monday afternoon.

First responders in Darlington responded to a fire on Sunday night and ended up saving the life of a pet guinea pig.
The Darlington Fire Department shared a photo on Facebook of firefighter Ben Conway bringing Gus the guinea pig out of the fire.
The fire broke out at a family’s home in the small unincorporated community of Calamine in Lafayette County.
