Eau Claire: Fire Prevention Week educates families on fire safety

A statistic released by the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs says in 2017 more than 1.3 million fires killed 3,400 and hurt 14,000 more. According to the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin Charitable Foundation, fire departments in the U.S. respond to more than 1,000 home fires each day, about one every 86 seconds.

Firefighters with the Milwaukee Fire Department are investigating after a car crashes into a Goodwill Monday evening. Police say they responded to a crash at 3900 N Palmer Street around 5:15 p.m. A car slammed into the front entrance of the Goodwill, injuring the driver. The severity of the injury is not known at this time, but the driver declined medical attention.

Waupaca County deer crash fire comes as state warns of darting deer

A car caught fire after a collision with a deer in Waupaca County Sunday night. This comes as the state reminds drivers to be alert for an increase in deer activity. Students visit Milwaukee's Survive Alive House to kick off Fire Prevention Week

City leaders and students met Monday at the Milwaukee Fire Department's Survive Alive House to kick off National Fire Prevention Week. Students from the Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School practiced an escape plan and learned about fire safety. At the Survive Alive House, students went through a simulated house fire and practiced how to get out safely.

Overnight fire destroys a pub in Waushara County

A fire destroys a pub in Tustin, in Waushara County, on the northwest corner of Lake Poygan. The pub is on the corner of County Highway H and Center Street. Fire crews were called about 10:20 Sunday night to the Pony Creek Pub. A Poy Sippi Fire Department deputy chief tells Action 2 News the building was already filled with fire when they arrived.

Follow Up: Fallen Sun Prairie volunteer firefighter honored at national ceremony in Maryland

A Sun Prairie volunteer firefighter is remembered at a national memorial service in Maryland. Thousands paid tribute to 119 firefighters killed in the line of duty. It was a solemn tribute to volunteer firefighter Cory Barr. Barr’s name is now etched on the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

South Carolina firefighter dies after being struck by semi while on the job

A Lexington County firefighter has died after he was struck by a semi while trying to help victims of a car crash. The fire service said Lexington County Fire Service Fire Engineer Paul Quattlebaum, a 22-year veteran of the agency, had been dispatched to a service call around 3:30 p.m. Friday. While he was headed to the scene, he and his partner saw a car crash in the 5200 block of Fairview Road.

Over 5,000 people attended the 38th National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Maryland

The 38th National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service took place over the weekend at the National Fire Academy in Maryland. Dispatching practices contribute to fire problems in New Jersey

The firehouse on John F. Kennedy Boulevard is just under a mile from Janice Pantano’s Central Avenue shore home, but on May 23, when Pantano called 911 to report her car on fire, it took 19 minutes before firefighters had begun spraying water at the scene. By the time the fire was put out, her car and her home were destroyed.

Backyard brook tested for toxic firefighting foam in wake of deadly Connecticut plane crash

Peter Street in Appleton around 4:30 p.m. for the report of smoke detectors sounding in an apartment unit. Arriving crews say one apartment was full of smoke.

Seymour firefighter suffers a heart attack while on the job

It started as a normal call last Friday for Dan Ravenhorst. "After I had started getting everything set up. Dan arrived on scene, so it was basically him and I for probably the first five minutes," said Township Fire Department Battalion Chief Randy Schenk. While responding to a mobile home fire in the town of Seymour, Ravenhorst did the same job he's done numerous times.

Janesville Fire Department receives improved insurance rating

The Janesville Fire Department’s improved insurance rating could draw businesses to town and make residents feel safer, Fire Chief Ernie Rhodes said. The national Insurance Services Office last week bumped Janesville’s fire services rating from Class 3 to Class 2, which Rhodes said is a significant change.

Washington state firefighter dies after suffering burns to more than half of his body

An Okanogan County assistant fire chief who suffered burns to more than half of his body died from his injuries on Wednesday. For the first time in 53 years, firefighters in Indiana land union contract

The Hobart City Council has unanimously approved a collective bargaining contract with Hobart Professional Firefighters Local 1641, the first time in 53 years the union has had a contract. "This is a landmark case for the fire department," City Councilman Matt Claussen said. Fellow firefighters, who filled the council chamber Wednesday night in a show of support, applauded the council's decision and the nearly yearlong negotiations between union president Enrique Lopez and a council subcommittee comprised of Claussen, City Councilman Dan Waldrop and City Councilman John Brezik.

South Carolina firefighters use social media to highlight long hours, short staffing

Fire Chief Norman Knight said they’re using social media to shine a spotlight on these issues. Cory Barr will be one of the 119 recognized in a ceremony on Sunday. Capt. Barr’s widow, Abby Barr, their twin daughters, family, Sun Prairie Fire Chief Christopher Garrison and more will attend.
