Stress-related disability claims filed by police, firefighters expected to increase under new Oregon law

Portland’s public safety disability fund expects to receive 10 new claims a year from police or firefighters seeking benefits for two types of stress disorders as the result of a new state law that went into effect last month. Lawmakers this summer approved Senate Bill 507 to define post-traumatic stress and acute stress disorders as occupational diseases for full-time police, firefighters, 911 emergency dispatchers, corrections officers and emergency medical service providers.

Stone Bank Fire Department to close after more than 100 years

After more than 100 years, the Stone Bank Fire Department will close. The fire chief says the move took them completely by surprise. This comes after the Town of Merton Board decided not to renew its contract with the Stone Bank Fire Department for 2020. Governor Tony Evers has signed a bill into law that ensures continuing healthcare coverage for the families of fallen state and local law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMS first responders. Earlier this month, the State Assembly approved a bill requiring the state, municipalities, and universities to continue paying health insurance premiums for immediate survivors of those killed in the line of duty.

Edgerton family, pets safe after home catches fire

An Edgerton family and its pets were able to safely escape a house fire. The fire broke out around 10 p.m. Tuesday in the family's laundry room, according to Randall Pickering, the chief of the Edgerton Fire Protection District. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the laundry room, but other rooms experienced extensive smoke damage, Pickering said.

Milwaukee County: Semi fire shuts down I-94 NB at County G

VIDEO/PHOTOS: All lanes on northbound I-94 were temporarily closed at County G Wednesday morning, Oct. 16 due to a semi fire near Oakwood Road. Additionally, two lanes were closed on southbound I-94 at Oakwood Road. The southbound ramp to Ryan Road was also closed. At 10:15 a.m., the interstate reopened at County Highway G in Racine County.

Fox Crossing Fire Department receives federal grant for 24-hour weekend staffing

In an emergency, a quicker response can save lives. Fox Crossing Fire Department will soon be ready to act immediately if something happens, specifically on the weekend. Ohio city planning to close long-standing fire station, eliminate battalion chiefs

Parolees Help Battle California's Saddleridge Fire as Part of New Reentry Program

Washington Department of Ecology will collect and incinerate toxic firefighting foam

The Washington Department of Ecology announced Monday it will begin collecting and incinerating stockpiles of a toxic fire retardant foam that was used by fire departments for decades before the state restricted its use in 2018. The same type of foam was long used at Fairchild Air Force Base and blamed for contaminating West Plains water supplies, including the city of Airway Heights' tap system.

New Auburn woman charged with arson in Barron County court

A New Auburn woman has been charged in Barron County court after her house was fully engulfed. A criminal complaint shows 45-year-old Tonia Morrison has been charged with arson of a building. Barron County Sheriff’s Department responded to a fire on Aug. 12 around 2:25 a.m. where they found smoke coming from the residence as they arrived.
