No one was home, but smoke alarms alerted neighbors to fire in Bellevue

Smoke detectors helped save a house from a fire even though no one was home. Brown County dispatchers received a report of smoke alarms sounding off on the 1400-block of McRae Circle. Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the basement. They found their way through heavy smoke to a mechanical room in the basement to put out the fire.

Off-duty Milwaukee firefighter recounts moment he was shot by attempted car thief

An off-duty Milwaukee firefighter who was shot by a would-be car thief is sharing his story for the first time. Steven Budnowski, 35, was shot in the leg Nov. 11. "I hear one gunshot, and that's when I felt the pain and I fell to the ground," he said. The shooting happened in the driveway of Budnowski's home after he confronted the shooter as the shooter was going through his car.

Firefighter's vehicle stolen in Oregon when responding to auto collision

A 2012 four-door maroon Dodge Ram 1500 belonging to an Oregon firefighter was stolen around 9 p.m. Wednesday, but then later located outside Oregon. According to a Facebook post, the firefighter left home at 9 p.m. to respond to an auto collision with injuries on Highway 14. In the rush to help those in the collision, he left his keys inside the truck and took the car from the fire station's parking lot.

Early detection by smoke alarm helped firefighters stop fire in downtown Madison business

Firefighters stopped a fire from breaking out in a downtown business at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, in part because of early detection by a smoke alarm. According to a release, a resident in the 300 block of North Randall Street woke up at 4:30 a.m. to the sound of an alarm and found the common area "very smoky.

Milton Joint Fire Commission considers local options for new station

The Milton Joint Fire Commission is focusing on two local options for updating Milton’s aging fire station: rebuilding in the existing location or relocating to city-owned land near the post office. The commission, made up of Milton City Council and Milton Town Board members, discussed the options but took no action Wednesday night.

Volunteer fire departments still exist? Yes — but this one in the Florida Keys is facing change

Former New Jersey firefighters allege racism in lawsuit against city

Two former city firefighters, both African Americans, have filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming they were the victims of racial discrimination, retaliation and a hostile work environment, especially under the leadership of retired Fire Chief Joseph Dooley. The 15-page lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Superior Court in Union County, charges that Joseph Braxton and Mark Bullock were subjected to "racial comments and jokes" daily.

‘Clearly a great leader', Missouri city names its first female fire department chief

Kansas City’s interim fire chief, Donna Maize, will become the first woman to lead the department, the city announced in a press release Wednesday. Maize, who was serving in City Manager Troy Schulte’s office, took the helm as interim chief in September when Gary Reese stepped down. Schulte on Wednesday appointed her to the permanent position, which she had indicated previously that she didn’t plan on pursuing.

Good Samaritan dad, firefighter killed helping at Pennsylvania crash scene

Massachusetts firehouse ordered vacated after discovery of asbestos

The sign on the door at Firehouse 7 says it all: “THIS PROPERTY CLOSED BY ORDER OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH.” Asbestos was detected on open surfaces inside the North Plymouth station, prompting the site to be locked down until further notice. Both the town manager and the Board of Health both issued declarations ordering Firehouse 7 closed.

Bartender credited for extinguishing fire at Kaukauna bar

A bartender is being credited for extinguishing a fire at The Roundabout Bar & Grill late Tuesday night. The Kaukauna Fire Department says smoke and fire could be seen coming from a wall, and the bartender used a fire extinguisher to control the spread of the fire. Firefighters say smoke was still present in the building when they arrived.

Bellevue Fire Department demonstrates turkey fryer dangers

New protocol allowing firefighters to leave scene to be tested in North Carolina

All members of the Medical Control Board voted to start testing a pilot program that would allow Charlotte firefighters to leave the scene of a call if the patient is OK and MEDIC is already on its way. New Jersey firefighters battle four-alarm blaze live on A&E's "Live Rescue"

No one was injured Monday night as Paterson firefighters battled a structure fire on Rosa Parks Boulevard that spread to an adjacent building. The fire was broadcast live on national television as part of a three-hour version of A&E's "Live Rescue." 7 displaced by fire sparked by woman using lighter on box spring in Racine

Seven people were displaced after a young woman used a lighter to burn loose strings on a box spring at a Racine home on Tuesday morning, Nov. 19. It happened shortly before 11 a.m. on Frank Avenue near 6th Street. Officials with the Racine Fire Department said the 19-year-old woman was using the lighter on the box spring in a bedroom on the second floor when fire got inside the box spring and quickly grew out of control.
