Calling 911 in Reno this year? You might find yourself on reality TV

If your house catches fire, your husband has a heart attack or your cat gets stuck in a tree in Reno this year, you might find yourself the unsuspecting star of a new "COPS"-style reality TV show that airs in real time. At its meeting Wednesday, the Reno City Council will decide whether to sign a contract with A&E's "Live Rescue" that would allow television production crews to embed with firefighters responding to calls.

Fire & Rescue Department in Ohio Announces New Recruitment Team

The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department (TFRD) is rolling out a new way to recruit with a focus on the community. Fire Chief Brian Byrd has assigned a specific team to recruit even more diverse candidates. They will work with community leaders like Toledo City Council members and Toledo Public Schools to fill the 50 open spots for the next class.

Gas leak prompts evacuation of two Edgerton schools

A leaking heating and cooling unit prompted authorities to evacuate Edgerton High School on Tuesday afternoon. Kindergarten students, who have been using the high school building were also evacuated. At 1:20 p.m., the fire department was called to the school after a staff member smelled natural gas in the library, said Fire Division Chief Brandon Whitmore.

Firefighters in Massachusetts protest mayor's inauguration over blackout policy

VIDEO: Firefighters in New Bedford protested the mayor's inauguration Monday night over the city's longstanding blackout policy. Fire station blackouts have been in effect since 2009 when the former mayor, Scott Lang, initiated the policy as a way to try and save money during the Great Recession. Through the policy, a different station is closed, or "blacked out", for a 24-hour period to cut back on staffing, therefore reducing costs.

Oregon state investigators knock fire department's readiness; City faces more than $10,000 in fines

The city faces $10,800 in fines from the state for safety violations at the Warrenton Fire Department. The state Occupational Safety and Health Administration initiated an investigation after anonymous complaints. It fined the city $7,500 for not ensuring a proper respiratory protection program, $2,100 for not ensuring employees wore the right protective equipment, $420 for improper training, $420 for not maintaining a safety committee, $180 for a lack of equipment inspections and $180 for not keeping a hazard communication program.

Sex offender accused of showing up to emergency scenes in South Carolina pretending to be firefighter

Fire destroys Clay Banks home in Door County

Woman sustains 'significant injuries' in Mount Pleasant house fire

A woman sustained "significant injuries" after a house fire broke out in a Mount Pleasant home. At 11:31 p.m. Sunday, the South Shore Fire Department was dispatched to 1119 N. Summerset Drive for a report of a possible structure fire, according to a South Shore Fire Department news release. Mount Pleasant police officers arrived on scene and confirmed smoke was visible from a single family home.

Authorities identify 2 snowmobilers killed in plunge into northern Wisconsin lake

Authorities have identified the two snowmobile riders who died and a third who survived when their machines plunged into a lake in northern Wisconsin early Sunday morning. Killed were David N. Nine people displaced after house fire in Green Bay

Nine people lost their home after a fire on the city’s east side early Monday morning. Fire crews responded to the blaze after 1 a.m. in the 300 block of South Quincy Street and found smoke coming from a first-floor window of a two-story home, according to the Green Bay Metro Fire Department. Officials said firefighters extinguished the blaze in less than 10 minutes.

Family of house fire that killed Missouri firefighter: ‘We can start over again, all they have left is the memories’

Boulder wants 25% of firefighters to be female by 2030 -- It’s got a long way to go

When Carol Brown joined the Boulder Fire Department in 1991, she was one of roughly a dozen female firefighters. Today a shift battalion chief, Brown is one of seven. Though Boulder was among the earliest to admit females to its force — the first two women were hired in 1978, according to Brown — the number of women in the city’s firefighting force has fallen over the years as older employees have retired.

Transporting patients: Made, saved money, lives for Ohio city and fire department over a decade

In 2009, when Fire Chief Tom Burgasser was told to cut 20% of his budget, he knew exactly what to do. Transporting patients to the hospital instead of handing them over to a private ambulance company seemed like a no-brainer, the chief recalled more than 10 years later. It cut out the middle man. Connecticut city to close historic downtown firehouse after near-century run

Program helps Racine paramedics teach patients ‘how to take care of themselves after that hospital visit’

An emerging program within the department is aimed at combating this problem at home.
