Every year thousands of farmers and commercial grain handlers risk their lives by entering grain bins to remove clumped or rotted grain. As rural communities have come to know all too well, an accident in a grain bin can quickly turn deadly. In just seconds, adults can sink to their waist in flowing grain, rendering them completely trapped without the proper rescue devices.

COVID-19 emergency field hospital opens in Milwaukee area

It’s a facility health officials hoped would never have to be utilized, but a field hospital in Milwaukee opened up on Wednesday, Oct. 14 in an effort to lessen the load on hospitals across the state. The facilities manager said on a call on Wednesday, while she’s impressed with the hard work it took to get the building ready, she hoped that she’d never actually had to open it.

Massive 3-alarm fire destroys apartment complex under construction in Texas; one firefighter hurt

A massive fire destroyed an apartment complex under construction Wednesday morning in west Harris County. At least one firefighter was injured. Flames turned the morning sky orange just before sunrise. Heavy smoke could be seen from miles away. Two four-story apartment buildings were leveled by the 3-alarm fire off the Grand Parkway near Katy.

California firefighters create fire safety songs for Fire Prevention Week

Researchers determine more effective ways to awaken children and their families during a house fire

When residential fires happen at night while families are sleeping, deaths are more likely to occur. Smoke alarms are important for preventing these deaths, yet research has shown that many pre-teenage children don't wake up to traditional high-frequency tone alarms. Researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy and the Sleep Disorders Center at Nationwide Children's Hospital conducted a series of studies to identify smoke alarm signals that would more effectively awaken children and other members of the household in the event of a fire.

Robot Used For First Time To Put Out Huge Fire At Downtown Los Angeles Textile Business

VIDEO: For the first time in the United States, a robotic firefighting vehicle was used Tuesday to battle a major emergency fire in downtown Los Angeles, officials said. The fire broke out in a textile business and spread to an adjacent building, and more than 130 firefighters extinguished the flames and prevented them from spreading further.

Home owner suffers burns in Manitowoc house fire

One person was treated for burns after a fire at a home and detached garage in Manitowoc Tuesday morning. At about 7:36 a.m., Manitowoc Firefighters were called to the 1300 block of S. 17th St. A caller reported flames and an “explosion.” Crews arrived on scene to find a detached garage in flames and fire coming from the rear of the home.

New Orleans firefighters already feeling impact of furloughs: 'It's going to get worse'

The first New Orleans firefighters were furloughed on Sunday under a plan requiring six unpaid days off by the end of the year to help stem a precipitous decline in city sales tax revenue during the coronavirus pandemic. The city’s furlough requires almost all 4,700 employees to take the six unpaid days, including police, firefighters and other safety workers, reducing their salaries by about 10% and saving the city $6 million.

Feds Defund 9/11 First Responder Health Program

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin says New York City will have to cover a $4 million shortfall to a program that helps 9/11 first responders pay for medical bills. The federal government removed funds to the World Trade Center Health Program to settle debts with the city over several years. Wausau Fire Department pink shirt sale goes on with safety precautions

The Wausau Fire Department went ahead with its pink T-shirt sale Monday for breast cancer awareness month, with a few modifications for the coronavirus pandemic. This year, the T-shirt is actually going to be a long sleeve. The department asked that people stay in their vehicles when they buy the shirts We’re about 75% sold out by now, so we a lot of our members wear the shirts and bring them home for their families.

Family safely escapes early-morning house fire in Germantown

A family was able to safely escape a home fire in Germantown Monday morning, Oct. 12. Authorities were called to Revere Lane just after 5:30 a.m. Firefighters rescued two cats from the home. The cause remains under investigation, but officials say it appears the fire started on the deck or near foundation of the house.

Report: Water Blast Knocked San Francisco Firefighter Over 3rd Story Railing In Fatal Training Accident

Most New York City firefighters retired with $100,000-plus annual pensions last year

More than three-quarters of FDNY employees who retired last year qualified for annual pensions exceeding $100,000 — with many awarded extra because of disabilities related to 9/11, a new study and data reveal. Forty of the 491 retirees landed gold-plated pensions of more than $200,000 a year, according to the study by the Empire Center for Public Policy.
