12 year-old boy in critical condition after being hit by a bus in Milwaukee

The Western Lakes Fire District responded for a school bus versus bicycle accident on North Main Street in Dousman just before 7:00 Thursday morning. A boy was riding his bike on North Main Street on the the sidewalk when he crossed Main Street and was hit by the school bus. Emergency officials were able to free the bicyclist who was trapped and take him to a local hospital in critical condition.

Sauk City man charged in apartment building arson

Police say a Sauk City man lit multiple fires in his apartment building after having disagreements with his landlord. Prosecutors have charged 46-year-old Kurt J. Haugen with two counts of felony arson for fires that took place in September and May at a Jackson Street apartment complex. Firefighters were called to the location May 5 after a resident reported smoke in a hallway.

1 dead, 2 missing after explosion at ethanol plant in Columbia County

VIDEO: One person was killed and several others injured in a late Wednesday explosion and fire at a corn milling plant in Columbia County. Two of the 16 employees that were on shift at the Didion Milling plant on Highway 146 in Cambria were still missing as of about 5 a.m. Thursday, Sheriff Dennis Richards said during a press conference at the Cambria Village Hall on Edgewater Street.

Windsurfer dead after being hit by boat on Lake Mendota

VIDEO: Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney confirms that a windsurfer has died after being hit by a boat. Mahoney says the surfer's body has been recovered. The identity of the surfer has not yet been released. The sheriff says the boater is being questioned and is cooperating with the investigation. Mahoney says there is no reason to suspect foul play was involved.

Wauwatosa: Westbound I-94 reopens after crash and fire

A collision between a truck carrying bottled products and a car in the Zoo Interchange caused a fire and created traffic backups in Wauwatosa Wednesday afternoon, May 31. No injuries have been reported. Officials have reopened westbound Interstate 94 after it was closed for over an hour due to the vehicle and truck fire.

Houston firefighters sue city over pension reform law

Houston's firefighters pension fund sued Mayor Sylvester Turner and numerous city officials late Tuesday over the pension reform plan that passed the Legislature last week, arguing the landmark legislation is unconstitutional. The Houston Firefighters Relief and Retirement Fund argues the reform plan unlawfully undercuts the board's legal authority to "select legal counsel and an actuary and adopt sound actuarial assumptions" and seeks to have a court permanently block the city from acting as though the reforms will become law.

Councilman used racial slurs against ousted California fire chief, lawsuit alleges

An Ontario councilman used racial slurs to refer to an ousted Ontario fire chief, according to legal papers filed in San Bernardino Superior Court on Wednesday. Floyd E. Clark first filed his lawsuit nearly 11 months ago. In February, he retained new trial lawyers, who amended the complaint to add specific, incendiary language a councilman used in referring to him, including “n-----” and “token black.

South Carolina firefighter learns value of training when his 5-year-old is found face down in pool

Pittsburgh poised to have first fireboat for firefighters since 1970s

Pittsburgh City Council on Wednesday voted unanimously to advance legislation that would provide training for 100 firefighters to operate a $542,750 fireboat the city ordered from Lake Assault Boats of Superior, Wis., this year. If approved, the legislation would authorize up to $300,000 in fees to be paid to the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators of Lexington, Ky.

"Slow" New Berlin Man Charged with Arson, Family Questions Confession

VIDEO: A New Berlin man has been charged with five counts of arson, including one count for a large industrial fire that happened in Muskego last Friday. But the suspect's family tells CBS 58's Jacob Kittilstad that they "don't know" if he actually did it. This suspect is 31-years-old Adam Erickson. Before his arrest he had been living with his family in the home he spent his entire life in.

Dogs rescued from Milwaukee's north side house fire

Firefighters from the Milwaukee Fire Department rescued eight dogs from a burning house on Milwaukee’s north side Tuesday night. Two other dogs, however, died, overcome by smoke from the fire. The fire was reported around 9:50 PM in a one-and-a-half story home at N. 102nd Street and W Vera Avenue. Firefighters put the fire out within 10 minutes but spent an additional amount of time looking through the home for the family’s pets.

Fire destroys Missouri fire station

Volunteer firefighters in Ozark County could only watch as a fire destroyed their own station early Tuesday morning. The fire at the Gainesville Fire Department occurred one month to the day after flash flooding left a mess inside the station. The department hadn’t fully cleaned up from the flood waters when the fire occurred.

Pennsylvania fire chief settles conspiracy suit vs. city

Upland Fire Chief Daniel Smith has settled a federal civil rights lawsuit against the borough, former police chief Nelson Ocasio and former council president Ed Mitchell, according to online court records.No details on the settlement were available Tuesday, but the suit filed by attorney Jacqueline Vigilante on behalf of Smith last year claimed Mitchell and Ocasio conspired to create false allegations against him and threatened bogus criminal charges unless he resigned from council in the wake of a dustup over improvements at the fire house.

South Carolina firefighter put out kitchen fire then stuck around to make dinner for the kids

As the first responders to most emergency calls, firefighters often handle many other tasks beyond just putting out fires. But it's not every day their line of duty calls for cooking skills. Latoya Riley, who lives in an apartment on Ashley Hall Plantation Road in West Ashley, was recently preparing pork chops for dinner for her two sons when the grease she was heating up caught fire.
