Sussex firefighter who crashed fire truck after drinking given fine

Former Fire Captain Thomas Gerstner who was charged with drunken driving and driving with an expired license after he struck a parked car with a fire truck during last year's Memorial Day Parade was fined $456.50 during his sentencing hearing on Wednesday, July 12. Judge Michael Maxwell amended the OWI charge to a reckless driving charge, which the court imposed the fine for based on Gerstner's blood alcohol level at the time of the incident, which was 0.

Superior Guns-n-Hoses: Rivalries heat up

Two friendly rivalries heat up as South End Days begins July 21. One takes place on the field, when the Superior Fire Department faces off against the Superior Police Department. The firefighters walked away with last year's inaugural Guns-n-Hoses softball title. As South End Days head organizer Kalee Hermanson remembers it, the score was 20 to 10.

St. Louis firefighter dies from injuries sustained in July 5 blaze

A St. Louis fire captain who sustained injuries while fighting a fire during the Fourth of July holiday has died. Capt. John Kemper, 59, died Wednesday after he was injured while battling a structural fire in the 3600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue early the morning of July 5, the department said. Kemper didn’t suffer any burns.

Houston firefighters asking for voters to approve parity with police officer salaries

Houston firefighters are in search of higher pay. It's part of a "firefighter pay initiative" launched by the firefighters' union. Connecticut Firefighter Fired Following Internal Investigation

Wausau Fire Department adds rescue airboat to fleet

The Wausau Fire Department has a new way to perform rescues out on the water. The department took delivery of a new rescue airboat Wednesday morning in Wausau. Deputy Fire Chief Josh Klug tells NewsChannel 7 personnel will begin training on how to use the boat in the upcoming weeks. Klug said the airboat will give the fire department more versatility when performing water rescues, as its design allows it to go on water, ice, and even muddy land in some situations.

Saeger retires from Port Edwards Fire Department

Construction on new Kenosha fire station to start next year

Work on a new fire station for the Kenosha Fire Department could begin next year. Judge: Pacemaker data can be used in Ohio arson trial

In what is believed to be the first case of its kind to use data from a beating heart as evidence, a Butler County judge ruled Tuesday that evidence from a pacemaker used to get a Middletown man indicted for arson can be presented at trial. Ross Compton, 59, was indicted in January on felony charges of aggravated arson and insurance fraud for allegedly starting a fire in September 2016 at his Court Donegal house.

Six 30-year vets retire from Massachusetts fire department

The formal retirement of Gloucester’s assistant fire chief on Sunday and the retirement of five other senior Fire Department members over the last 2 1/2 weeks have created a six-person void in the city’s firefighting force, Fire Chief Eric Smith said Monday. Aiello’s official departure on Sunday came just two weeks after the retirements of Deputy Chief Miles Schlichte and firefighter Joseph Misuraca, both of whom also served with the department for more than 30 years.
