Public Budget Hearing being held to address cuts to Milwaukee police and fire department positions

VIDEO: Milwaukee is currently projecting a loss of 84 police officers and 75 firefighters under next years budget. But, they say they are actively working to reduce both of those numbers. Residents are invited to the city municipal building to go over the situation during a public budget hearing. Estimates show that the loss could reduce the fire department to meeting mandated response times 90% of the time.

Compressor explosion starts fire in Fitchburg manufacturing plant

Fitchburg firefighters said no one was hurt during a fire early Tuesday. Firefighters said a compressor for one of the machines used at a manufacturing plant for the Placon Corporation exploded Tuesday morning, causing a fire. The building's sprinklers were able to put the fire out before causing any real damage.

No injuries in early-morning fire in Oshkosh on Merritt Avenue

VIDEO: No one was injured Tuesday in an early-morning fire in the 200 block of Merritt Avenue. Oshkosh Fire Chief Tim Franz said authorities responded to a fire in a duplex at 1:51 a.m. About 80 percent of the roof and attic were burning upon their arrival. Five companies responded to the scene. The flames were as high as 20 feet, Franz said.

FDNY denies petition to add honor to fallen Bronx EMT's legacy

The city fire department Monday denied a petition to posthumously promote a Bronx EMT who was killed in the line of duty in March. An FDNY spokesperson said Yadira Arroyo was not on a civil service promotional list at the time she died, and no other "legal or administrative process" exists for her posthumous promotion.

Fire-suppression error sends foam pouring out of Maine airport hangar

Firefighters responding to the Lufthansa hangar at the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport on Monday morning walked into a wall of foam over their heads after a malfunction in the fire suppression system filled the building with foam and briefly trapped four people inside. "Apparently, they were working on the system when there was an error," Fire Chief Geoff Low said.

DC firefighter allegedly assaulted on call accused of being drunk on the job

A DC firefighter who was allegedly assaulted while responding to a call has been accused of being intoxicated while on the job, according to officials. DC Fire and EMS officials said the firefighter was responding to a call Sunday afternoon for a 3-year-old girl who suffered an injury after falling from her bed in the 200 block of 37th Street, SE.

Michigan paramedics boost success rate in reviving cardiac arrest victims

Medical first responders in Northville Township have dramatically improved their ability to revive victims of cardiac arrest and help them return to normal lives. In the past 12 months, Northville Township Fire Department paramedics have restored pulses to 19 of 28 patients who were in full cardiac arrest — that is, who had no pulse and were not breathing.

Philadelphia firefighter apologizes for photo causing backlash

A picture taken of a Philadelphia firefighter is causing controversy. Tonight, while some are calling the photo insensitive and racist the firefighter himself is apologizing for what he calls a very bad joke. "I am very disappointed in myself and I'm very sorry." John Deluisi says he was drunk when he snapped a photo and tagged an African American co-worker at the Philadelphia Fire Department.

Smoke on the water: Fire in canoe not legal, Madison Fire Department tells partiers

What probably sounded like a fun idea on Lake Monona Friday night brought out the lake rescue team, when a boat was seen on fire, but the fire turned out to be in a fire pit in a canoe, used to help celebrate a lighted paddle cruise. Nobody was hurt in the incident, which was reported at 9:18 p.m., the Madison Fire Department said.

Some question New York mayor’s role as public safety chief

Neighbors, firefighters saved 3 infants trapped in fire, father charged with arson, Florida officials say

Quick action by neighbors and firefighters -- and a little luck -- saved three infants trapped inside a burning apartment on Friday that police say was set on fire by their father after a domestic dispute with the children’s 19-year-old mother. California firefighters known for their work on land. But their efforts on water just as crucial

The most dramatic images of firefighters often depict them emerging from a building engulfed in flames, a person draped across their arms, or making their way down a ladder high in the air, a child held tightly to their chest. Rescues from burning buildings happen, but are rare. In fact, firefighters with the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District more commonly conduct water rescues, having averaged nearly three per week this spring and summer.

Eight firefighters injured in fire crew truck rollover in California

Eight Firestorm firefighters were injured Friday morning after the crew truck they were riding in rolled over while traveling on Highway 299E near McKenney Road, west of Cedarville. According to Firestorm, all eight members who were injured were passengers. CHP reported that all eight were taken to the hospital.

Heroes without capes: Portugal’s firefighters work for free

Almost all of the 2,000 Portuguese firefighters at a weeklong wildfire that killed 64 people this summer had something in common apart from the acute danger they faced: they were doing it for no pay and with equipment bought with public donations. Crews douse Clinton house fire; firefighter taken to hospital

Crews from multiple fire departments converged on a Clinton neighborhood Sunday morning to put out a house fire, Rock County dispatchers said. The call came in just after 8:30 a.m. for a structure fire at a vacant house at 314 Church Street, officials said. The back third of the more than 100-year-old house is a total loss, Clinton Fire Department Assistant Chief Larry London said.

Gas leak at Green Bay restaurant sends four to hospital, forces building evacuation

Leaking gas sent four people to the hospital Sunday morning and forced the evacuation of 30 to 40 people from a downtown commercial building. Firefighters traced the leak to the Koko Sushi Bar & Lounge, on the first floor at 301 N. Adams St. Steve Sellin, a Green Bay Metro Fire Department battalion chief, said the gas supply to a grill was on, but the pilot light was out.
