Beaver Dam Fire Department receives ‘Call of the Year’ award

Beaver Dam Fire Chief Alan Mannel accepted the “Call of the Year” award from Flight For Life Wednesday night for his department’s quick response to a November 2016 crash. “It’s something you guys should never have to go through again,” said Jayce Commo, professional relations with Flight For Life. Commo told the fire department that the response won in a landslide.

‘Incinerated Pop-Tart' prompts UW dorm evacuation

A University of Wisconsin-Madison residence hall was evacuated Wednesday morning after an incinerated Pop-Tart set off fire alarms, according to a release. Firefighters were called just before 9 a.m. to Phillips Hall on Willow Drive when alarms started to sound, officials said. A maintenance worker told crews the alarm originated in a second-floor dorm room, and there was a smell of burned food in the building, according to the release.

Saturday block party benefits Baraboo firefighters with entertainment starting Thursday

Fire On Oak Fest promises a hot time Saturday in downtown Baraboo. The third annual event benefiting the Baraboo Fire Department will return to the street outside Brothers On Oak, the fundraiser’s sponsor. “Every year has gotten bigger and better,” said Brothers On Oak owner Grant Slayton. Firefighters will sell brats, beer and raffle tickets to raise money during the block party, set for 1-10 p.

Possible arsonist and fireworks thief in Town of Easton

The search is on in the Town of Easton for a possible arsonist and fireworks thief. A fire destroyed an uninsured home on East Tower Road on Aug. 26 when the homeowner was gone, Marathon County Deputy Sheriff Dale Ruechel said. "At the same time, someone stole a large amount of fireworks from a shed on the property and stole three of the five trail cameras the owner had up on the land," he said.

Follow Up: Fund to help Kenosha family displaced by fire

A fund has been established to help a multi-generational family of six who was displaced Monday when a fire destroyed their home at 4611 18th Ave. Karen and Michael Scofield owned the home they shared with their daughter Stephanie, son-in-law Jared Hunt, and grandchildren Tyler, 5, and Avery, 1. Karen said the family’s most immediate needs — clothing, school supplies and temporary shelter — have been met.

Kansas City fire chief announces he will retire

Kansas City Fire Chief Paul Berardi is retiring after 32 years of service, including the last five as the city’s top firefighter. His last day on the job will be Nov. 11. In his resignation letter, Berardi expressed great pride in being able to serve as chief and thanked City Manager Troy Schulte, the City Council, Kansas City residents and his staff for their support.

Oregon firefighters use "bail out" system to rescue trapped resident from fire

Clackamas County firefighters performed a dramatic rescue Wednesday morning of a resident trapped in a Happy Valley home fire. Firefighters responding Wednesday at 3:46 a.m. to reports of a fire in the 9000 block of Top O 'Scott Steet were met by two people who had escaped the home but reported that a third was trapped on the second floor, according to a news release from Clackamas Fire District No.

Indianapolis firefighter injured after falling through house roof

A member of the Indianapolis Fire Department was seriously injured battling an overnight house fire. According to IFD, crews were called out to a double residence, two-story structure in the 1400 block of Charles Street just before 1:30 Thursday morning. Upon arrival, heavy fire was spotted from the front of the structure.

Louisiana fire chief under investigation, placed on leave

The city of Kenner announced Wednesday (Sept. 6) that Fire Chief John Hellmers has been placed on administrative leave while he is under investigation. Kenner Chief Administrative Officer Deborah Foshee's press release did not say what sparked the investigation. But the city will not comment any further on the matter until the completion of the probe.

Washington Firefighters Volunteer to Save Lives While Off-Duty

Clyman shed, other buildings are damaged by fire on Friday

Firefighters from multiple agencies were paged to N4040 Welsh Road in the town of Clyman shortly before noon Friday for a shed fire. According to Clyman Fire Chief Eric Howlett, initial reports were called in that a shed was fully engulfed in flames. Howlett said that, upon arrival ,the Clyman Fire Department found one shed that was completely destroyed and the fire had spread to a nearby garage and storage shed.

Plans for new Eau Claire fire station advance

The city Plan Commission approved on Tuesday plans for a new fire station at Malden Avenue and Birch Street on Eau Claire’s north side. The commission approved the site plan showing the station on the 5.76-acre plat’s northern side, one of three options proposed by Five Bugles Design. The proposals on the southern side would have meant $300,000 more in construction costs largely due to soil remediation because a portion of the site used to house a landfill.

Arson suspected in fire that destroyed vacant Kenosha building

Investigators believe an arsonist may have set the fire that destroyed a vacant building early Tuesday. Kenosha Fire Chief Charles Leipzig said firefighters were called to the blaze at 5907 Fifth Ave. at about 3 a.m. The building was among five aging apartment buildings and a rooming house the city purchased recently, with plans to raze them to make way for future development.
