Ohio fire chief encouraged by early results of new addict-assistance program

A six-month-old program aimed at getting help for people addicted to opioids is seeing positive results , according to leaders of the effort. The city’s heroin quick response team has contacted 65 people who have had an opioid overdose since its launch March 1. Called the Helping Overdose through Prevention and Education, or HOPE, program, a team consisting of a police officer, paramedic and a social worker has a goal of meeting with a person who overdosed within three to five days to connect them with appropriate assistance.

147 Years Later Peshtigo Remembers Fire That Destroyed City

But no other fire compares to the Peshtigo fire which killed at least 1,200 people - and is the deadliest in U.S. history. The Great Chicago fire blazed it's way across the Windy City the same day a forest fire ignited in Peshtigo.

Greenfield: Body found in burning pickup truck

Greenfield Police are looking for answers about a body found inside a burned-out pickup truck. Officers got a call from a neighbor about a vehicle on fire in the 5600-block of Parking Street about 4am Sunday. After firefighters put the fire out, they found a body inside the car. Greenfield Police are not saying who it is, or how they died.

‘Unbelievable:’ Officials work to determine cause of Elm Grove fire so intense it sent 6 firefighters to hospital

VIDEO: Sixteen fire departments and three police departments responded to a fire in Elm Grove on Saturday evening, Oct. 6 that resulted in injuries to six firefighters, who were taken to the hospital, where they were treated and released. The call came in shortly before 6:30 p.m. for the fire at a home on Fairhaven Boulevard near Watertown Plank Road.

Kenosha Fire Stations bake pizzas for a cause, and bragging rights for best pie

Firefighters are known for their chili. But among fire stations and firefighters in Kenosha, they’re also known for their pizzas. Each of the six stations in town make their own pizza from scratch. So who has the best? On Sunday, a friendly battle ensued to settle that question. About 150 people sampled pizza at UAW Local 72 headquarters for the first Kenosha Firefighters Pizza Bake-Off, a benefit for the Kenosha Literacy Council and Kenosha Firefighters Community Awareness Relief Effort, the fundraising arm of the firefighters union Local 414 and the Kenosha Fire Department.

New York Limo crash kills 20 people in deadliest U.S. transportation accident since 2009

A limousine carrying several couples to a birthday party failed to stop at an intersection in upstate New York and struck a parked vehicle, killing 20 people in the deadliest transportation accident in the United States in nearly a decade, according to authorities and a family member. Federal jury finds Oregon fire district breached former chief's contract, awards $500,000

A federal jury this week awarded $500,000 to a former Klamath fire chief after finding Klamath County Fire District No. 1 breached his contract when it fired him in August 2013 without due process. James Wenzel served as fire chief for five and a half years. His lawyer argued that the county failed to provide Wenzel adequate notice or a hearing before his termination and never told him why he'd been under investigation.

Manitowoc Pattern & Manufacturing damaged in Saturday fire

A fire at Manitowoc Pattern & Manufacturing Co. Inc. Saturday afternoon resulted in smoke and water damage throughout most of the business. Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department was called to the business, 4315 Expo Drive, at around 1 p.m. Saturday for the report of smoke coming from the building, Manitowoc Fire Rescue said in a press release.

Missouri Firefighter Dies after Apparatus Accident

El Dorado Springs Firefighter Russ Hayes, 62, has died after a wreck in a firetruck. The El Dorado Springs firefighter lost control of a vehicle in Stockton, and was life-flighted to Springfield. El Dorado Springs City Manager Bruce Rogers tells KOLR10 that Hayes, 62, was on his way to have a pump inspected for annual certification on one of their trucks.

Ohio fire department demotes 9, removes one truck from service

The downsizing of government in the city of Youngstown began Thursday with cuts in the fire department. There will likely be more to come, one city official told us the police department and clerk of courts may be next. But Thursday the focus is on the fire department.
