New Jersey firefighter union sues the state

The union representing the city’s firefighters has filed a complaint against the city and state over unfair promoting practices, compensation and unpaid raises. International Association of Fire Fighters Local 198 filed the complaint Monday in state Superior Court alleging the city and the state Department of Community Affairs and Division of Local Government Services have failed to “act in good faith” when promoting firefighters to captains and failed to pay contractually mandated step raises.

Dangerous carbon monoxide levels send Milwaukee family of 4 to hospital

Deadly levels of carbon monoxide (CO) sent a family of four to the hospital. It happened on Milwaukee's northwest side. "They were having symptoms of headaches and a bit disoriented," said Battalion Chief James Hardy, with the Milwaukee Fire Department. A carbon monoxide leak brought firefighters out on a cold day to a home just north of 79th and Hampton.

Two months after their captain's death, Lake Mills fire department keeps memory alive

A man accused of killing a Lake Mills firefighter was officially charged in Dane County Court Thursday. Originally, Cremers was arrested on a tentative charge of homicide by drunken driving. He blew a .079 during a breathalyzer test, which is below Wisconsin’s legal limit to drive. Cremers is now charged with knowingly operating a vehicle with a suspended license.

Schulenburg pledges to keep Prairie du Sac Fire Department moving forward

No OWI charges for driver who killed Lake Mills firefighter

The man accused of hitting and killing an off-duty firefighter during a New Year's Eve crash will not be charged with drunk driving. Court records filed Wednesday show that Samuel Cremers will instead be charged with knowingly operating a vehicle while his license was suspended causing death. Cremers allegedly caused the crash that killed Lake Mills Fire Captain Chris Truman after Truman had pulled over to help a stranded motorist along the Beltline.

Detroit medics, firefighters told to clean up bloody scenes without training, equipment

You can’t make me shave my beard, born-again Christian firefighter tells New Jersey department

An Atlantic City firefighter filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city and the department’s chief and deputy chief after learning he would be suspended without pay unless he shaved his beard, which he has grown out for religious reasons. Alexander Smith, who has worked for the fire department for more than 15 years and makes $115,000 a year as an air mask technician, is a born-again Christian who began growing out his beard in December as an expression of his faith, according to a lawsuit filed last week.

Colorado fire department welcomes first black recruit

The Pueblo Fire Department's newest class of firefighter recruits consists of six men who were selected to serve Pueblo residents based on their "experience, merit, and fitness for the position," but it's also making history for the department. Terrence Fantroy-Hankins will be PFD's first black firefighter when he completes the academy class, which started March 1.

5-year-old boy in Maine helps local volunteer fire department

Houston City Council at standstill over Prop B firefighter pay parity

The Oshkosh Fire Department, and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office faced-off in the Boots vs. Badges charity basketball game. Janesville company develops glycol-free training smoke

Pine River firefighters lose everything after firehouse burns down

Firefighters in far northern Wisconsin are living their worst nightmare after their own firehouse burned down Tuesday night. According to a Facebook post from the Pine River Fire Department, firefighters of the La Pointe, Wisconsin Fire Department in Madeline Island lost their firehouse. Initial reports suggest the building and everything inside was destroyed including firetrucks and firefighting equipment.

Gear freezes up during Neenah-area business fire

Firefighters say cold weather caused gear to freeze up as they battled a fire at a Neenah-area business. Milwaukee firefighter hurt while responding to scene near 35th and Hadley

A Milwaukee firefighter was hurt late Tuesday night while responding to a fire near 35th and Hadley. According to the department, crews were responding to a fire in a vacant house when a firefighter fell through a hole in the floor. The firefighter had minor injuries, was treated and is expected to return to work.
