Planes, helicopters, unmanned systems to test search-and-rescue plans in southwestern Wisconsin

Planes, helicopters and nonmilitary unmanned aerial systems will test their plans in a search-and-rescue exercise over southwestern Wisconsin Thursday, according to a news release from the Department of Military Affairs. Officials said various agencies will participate in Dyracuse Recreational Park in Adams County, Sauk Prairie Recreational Area and Devil's Lake State Park near Baraboo.

Wisconsin Public Service surprises Kronenwetter Fire and Police with grant money

The Kronenwetter Fire and Police departments are getting some new equipment thanks to a grant from Wisconsin Public Service. Wednesday, WPS surprised fire and police staff with the Rewarding Responders grant. The grant is awarded to 27 different emergency response agencies throughout the WPS service area.

Sheboygan County tornadoes put 911 dispatchers to the test; A year later what has changed?

There's a hum of activity even on a slow day. Several screens tower over each 911 dispatcher, and there are usually four or five dispatchers. Red and green lights flicker on and off indicating when one of them is on the phone or radio. This room is dark. But it's organized. And it withstood the chaos of 605 calls in five hours when three tornadoes left a trail of damage during a vicious storm that pummeled Sheboygan County on Aug.

Ohio firefighters create support program in response to first responder suicide rate increase

New York City isn’t the only community dealing with an increase of first responder suicides. Nationally, suicides for both police officers and firefighters have surpassed line-of-duty deaths for the respective positions. In Lakewood, firefighters Ryan Fairbanks and Ryan Birth decided to tackle this epidemic by creating the Fire Peer Support initiative.

Officials: Man set fires that caused $5M in damages to draw SoCal firefighters out of stations so he could burglarize them

A 21-year-old former San Bernardino County Fire Explorer is suspected of starting numerous fires that resulted in more than $5 million in damages as a diversion to burglarize fire stations across Southern California, the Orange County Fire Authority said Tuesday. Christian David Saddler, of Hesperia, has been serving a five-year prison sentence on an arson and burglary conviction since July, authorities said.

County-wide emergency responders meet for first-ever group training program in Tennessee

MTSU Police has joined hundreds of law enforcement and emergency personnel from throughout Rutherford County to take part in a first-ever comprehensive training program to better coordinate response to major incidents and active threats in the county. MTSU Police Capt. Jeff Martinez, a U.S. Army veteran, is among a group of instructors who is helping train roughly 1,200 emergency personnel by the end of the year made up of law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel representing Rutherford County, Murfreesboro, Smyrna, La Vergne, Eagleville, MTSU and Motlow State Community College.

Maryland county to give 7.9 percent pay raise to county's career firefighters

County Executive Jan Gardner (D) has announced a nearly 8 percent pay raise for the county’s career firefighters and EMTs, starting Oct. 26. In an email to acting Fire Chief Tom Coe and county firefighters — including Stephen Jones, president of the Career Firefighters Association of Frederick County Local 3666, the county’s career firefighter union — Gardner said the raise was to help the county remain competitive with other jurisdictions and show her appreciation to the department.

'Glamorized camping': Utah firefighters moving into a tent while new station is built

DCFD ALIRT team to improve low retention numbers for volunteer firefighters in Kentucky

The Daviess County Fire Department has implemented a new program that officials say will be better for both firefighters and the community. The Daviess County Advanced Large Incident Response Team (ALIRT) will help to reduce firefighter injuries, heat exhaustion and fatigue during large incidents, and will give firefighters the chance to work alongside colleagues from various departments across the county.

Elmwood house fire under investigation, no injuries reported

The cause of an Aug. 26 Elmwood fire that left a home a complete loss is under investigation. Four fire departments responded to the fire at 138 W. Shaw Ave. around 11:30 a.m. Monday. No injuries were reported. Three children and one adult were safely evacuated from the home according to Elmwood Fire Chief Rob Bowen.

Appleton firefighters filling the boot for muscular dystrophy

The Appleton Fire Department is kicking off the annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign. For the 65th year, AFD is raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) helping transform the lives of kids and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related muscle-debilitating diseases. More than 80 Appleton firefighters are hitting the streets and storefronts with boots in hand asking pedestrians, motorists, customers and others to make a donation to MDA on August 26, 27, and 29 from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM at Walmart and Pick n’ Save in Appleton.

People escape Howard house fire thanks to neighbors and smoke detectors

Everyone inside of a house in Howard escaped a fire late Sunday night thanks to neighbors and smoke detectors. Janke says neighbors spotted the flames and alerted the people inside the home. Smoke detectors were ringing as well. No one was hurt, but firefighters were searching to see if the cats in the home were able to escape.

Georgia apartment fire injures 3 firefighters, 1 seriously, forces 11 families from their homes

VIDEO: Three firefighters are recovering from injuries they received while working a massive fire caused by a lightning strike at the Liberty Oaks Apartments on Saturday that displaced 11 families. One firefighter received traumatic injuries after a roof collapsed on him. A second firefighter received first and second degree burns, while a third firefighter is suffering from third degree burns.

Large-scale incident safety for first responders - Emergency management, response has changed since 9/11

For first responders, the 9/11 terrorist attacks were a mind-numbingly unique and devastating event. “It was hard to prepare for something of that magnitude. It was such a large call,” said Patrick J. Morrison, assistant to the general president for occupational health, safety and medicine at the International Association of Fire Fighters.
