Pennsylvania borough to disband unionized, full-time fire department

Borough leaders recently informed firefighters here they would eliminate unionized, full-time positions and transition to a department that relies on part-timers, volunteers and subcontractors. Firefighters whose jobs are on the line are steamed and residents plan to stage a protest outside of Tuesday night’s council meeting at the borough’s municipal “The fire department has religiously worked in the best interest of the borough,” said firefighter John Fronzoni, a 20-year veteran who is union steward for the department.

Milwaukee Fire Department sells t-shirts to help promote diversity

The Milwaukee Brotherhood of Firefighters (MBFF) on Monday, Sept. 14 unveiled t-shirts for sale to members of the Milwaukee Fire Department and the public. In a news release, the MBFF indicated it works to promote diversity in the Milwaukee Fire Department -- to educate the community in fair and just practices and provides mentoring to disenfranchised youth.

Appleton to participate in ‘Light the Night’ for fallen firefighters, Lundgaard to be honored

The City of Appleton will participate in a week-long vigil before America’s tribute to fallen firefighters. Every October, fallen fire service heroes are honored at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Park, located on the campus of the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend is the official national tribute to those firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year.

Town of Delafield Fire Department joins Lake Country Fire and Rescue

The town of Delafield Fire Department will consolidate with Lake Country Fire and Rescue. The town board approved the move Sept. 1; the change is effective Jan. 1, 2021. "It was never a question of if the town was going to consolidate, it was always a question of when," said Town Supervisor Edward Kranick.

La Crosse Fire Department responds to overnight bluff rescue

The La Crosse Fire Department, with assistance from Technical Rescue Team members, successfully rescued someone from the bluffs early Monday morning. At approximately 12:08 a.m., the fire department was dispatched to 4499 Grandad Bluff Road for a person that had fallen from the bluff. La Crosse Fire made contact with the patient along with La Crosse Police Department personnel that were on scene, and were able to safely evacuate the person.

Off-duty New York City firefighter carries out neighbor as massive fire rips through own home

Oregon fire chief and crew lose homes, station as they battle Holiday Farm Fire

Woman suffers graze wound, firehouse and other buildings struck by bullets in Chicago shooting

Montana fire in '36 threw scare into American sports scene

Bernie Bierman rubbed his smoke-reddened eyes and managed a grin of relief. It was just after 4 a.m. on Sept. 24, 1936, and the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football coach was standing across the street from the Florence Hotel in downtown Missoula as it went up in flames. Bierman was out his watch, hat, shaving kit and key ring, all left back upstairs in his haste to escape.

Wisconsin man attempts to break push-up record in honor of fallen first responders

Thoughts of the first responders who died on 9/11 weigh heavy on one Wisconsin man attempting to break a world record in honor of fallen police officers and firefighters. Nate Carroll is attempting to break the record of most push-ups done in a 12-month period by completing 1.5 million. On Saturday, Carroll put a good dent in his challenge by doing nine sets of 414 push-ups in honor of the 343 firefighters and 71 police officers who died on 9/11.

Two injured after suspected drunk driver crashes into Green Bay home

Police suspect a woman was driving drunk when she crashed her vehicle into a home early Saturday morning on the city's east side. Marathon City firefighters honor those lost on 9/11, reflect on where they were that day

Six people displaced from Appleton house fire that caused $100,000 in damage

Six people were displaced from a house fire just after 7:30 a.m. Friday, according to firefighters. The Appleton Fire Department said the fire happened at a home on the 700 block of E. DNR: 2/3 of Wisconsin fire departments storing PFAS foam; 62% lack usage policy

Nearly two out of three Wisconsin fire departments are storing foam containing hazardous PFAS chemicals that could cost millions of dollars to safely dispose of, according to a state Department of Natural Resources survey. Based on the survey conducted this spring, the DNR estimates there are between 63,200 and 96,300 gallons of foam on hand, including more than 30,000 gallons of expired or unwanted foam.

Chemical plant fire in Williamson County now 99% contained, officials say
