Milwaukee firefighters canvassed a neighborhood Thursday, Oct. 7, checking for working smoke alarms during Fire Prevention Week.
Walking in the rain, firefighters with the Milwaukee Fire Department heard the faint chirp of an alarm’s battery dying and didn't waste any time working to fix it.
"We just heard a chirp," firefighters said.

Firefighters from across the state will travel to the Wisconsin State Firefighters and EMS Memorial on Saturday to honor six firefighters who died in the line of duty, including three who died from COVID-19.
The 16th annual Final Alarm and Roll Call Ceremony will take place at 3:33 p.m. Saturday at the memorial in Ben Hansen Park, 2031 Second Ave.

The Merton Town Board has agreed to extend its contract for fire and emergency medical services by six months with the privately operated Merton Community Fire Department.
According to Merton Chairman Tim Klink, the contract extension will expire June 30. Klink said the goal for the town is to have a single-carrier system for fire and EMS at some point.

A cliff rescue resulted in a surprise for firefighters in Santa Barbara on Monday.
Crews were dispatched to Hope Ranch Beach around 4 p.m. after receiving reports of a person stuck on a cliff about 30 feet down.
After arriving with UTV's, a drone, fire engines and a truck, firefighters discovered the "person" in need was a hanging mannequin.

A father and son firefighting team in Hermon was honored Wednesday before they head overseas for deployment.
The Hermon Fire Department presented Eric and Noah Campbell with the Blue Star Flag.
It’s given to military members serving overseas.
Eric had been set to retire from the department, but getting the opportunity to work directly with his son changed his mind.

Local firefighters will be showing off their colorful side this month, with unique pink ribbon badges adorning their helmet fronts. Pink ribbons are a universal symbol of breast cancer prevention and support and typically worn during Breast Cancer Awareness Month each October.
Deputy Fire Chief Paul Wilson said the decision to go with pink helmet badges was made to show support and solidarity for the cause.

October typically marks the beginning of the flu season and it's coming with new warnings of a possible "twindemic" of COVID-19 and influenza.
The United States and much of the world got a welcome break from the flu last year with fewer cases than any time in recent history. The coronavirus was spreading fast but pandemic mitigation measures like masking, social distancing and people going to school and working remotely left few opportunities for the flu virus to spread.

One person was rescued from a fire at a temporary men’s shelter Tuesday night, according to the Madison Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at 200 North First Street in Madison at about 10:12 p.m.
The crew entered the building to investigate and found gray smoke in a room and a mattress inside that was on fire.

A New Jersey woman who police said drove her jeep through an emergency area on I-76 in Montgomery County over the summer and struck and killed a firefighter while injuring three other first responders is now charged with third-degree murder. Her initial DUI charge was dropped.
Jacqueline Walker, 63, of Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, is charged with third-degree murder, homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and other related offenses.

The retired Muskogee fire department captain was overheard by residents and workers at Azalea Gardens Memory Care say that he wanted to take one more ride.

When Orange County Fire rescue veteran Erik Siena lost his five-month battle with brain cancer this past May, his wife Christy filed for the line-of-duty death benefit provided under Florida Senate Bill 426.
Christy, who served as a paramedic with the department for 16 years, never received out-of-pocket medical expenses, the $7,500 designated for funeral expenses or the $75,000 death benefit promised under the existing law.

Both Wisconsin Dells area fire departments stress there is always room for more firefighters to assist when the pager goes off and firefighters must rush to the scene to assist those in need.
Delton Fire Department currently has 27 out of 35 spots filled while Kilbourn Fire Department has 30 out of 36 spots filled on its roster.

In 2020, 69 emergency responders were hurt and 2 were killed while responding to an emergency alongside the roadway. With the recent amount of injuries and fatalities, it is crucial that drivers understand the laws in place.

The Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department held a groundbreaking ceremony at Station 1 for their new renovation and addition on Tuesday.
The project has been in the works since 2018. It will cost 2.7 million dollars to complete. Fire Chief Scott Young says it well worth it.

A Menasha man was sentenced to 7 years in prison for setting a gas station in Neenah on fire in January.
The Ridgeway VP Phillips 66 station was heavily damaged by fire early in the morning on Friday, January 21 (see related story). Investigators determined cash, cigarettes and liquor were stolen before the fire was set.
