Fire Marshal: Evacuation plan saved lives in Wausau house fire

VIDEO: A Wausau family is safe after a late night fire caused significant damage to their home. Wausau Fire Marshal Dave DeSantis said the reason everyone made it out OK is because the family had a fire evacuation plan. One dead after 'hoarder house' fire in Milwaukee

A woman died late Monday night in what authorities are calling a "hoarder house" fire. Advertisement The fire was reported around 10:30 p.m. near North 80th Street and West Mill Road in Milwaukee. An official with the fire department told WISN 12 News this was a case of "extreme hoarding." Emergency crews waded through several feet of items inside the home, according to authorities.

Milwaukee: Donald Driver named "honorary firefighter" for seatbelt campaign work

Packer's all-time leading receiver Donald Driver was honored by the "Zero in Wisconsin Campaign" on Monday. The Department of Transportation campaign aims to reach a goal of zero traffic-related deaths in Wisconsin. The organization says since it started airing ads starring Driver, seat-belt use in the state is at an all-time high.

NASCAR champ Tony Stewart gets stuck in Madison hotel elevator

Former NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart spent part of his 46th birthday on Saturday in Madison stuck in a hotel elevator. Stewart, in town for dirt-track races at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie on Sunday, was staying at Staybridge Suites, 3301 City View Drive. Shortly after midnight, the elevator he and several others were in stopped at the second floor and wouldn’t move.

La Crosse Police and Fire Commission to vote on new Fire Chief Wednesday

VIDEO: The city of La Crosse is nearing the confirmation of its new fire chief. According to the agenda released for Wednesday's Police and Fire Commission meeting, the commission will vote on the appointment of Ken Gilliam to the position of fire chief. Members of the commission confirmed to News 8 that the vote will be taking place.

Wisconsin firefighters trained for farm accidents

VIDEO: Farm accidents are an unfortunate reality in Wisconsin. Saturday, area-firefighters got special training on how to respond to them. In 2015, more than two dozen people died on the job in agricultural and related occupations in Wisconsin, according to the most recent federal statistics. "This time of year now that the rain has been holding back, farmers are getting into fields, they're gonna be wanting to get in there and get stuff done quickly," Scott Larson with Stateline Farm Rescue explained.

Columbus Fire Department puts new breathing apparatus into service

The Columbus Fire Department recently put into service new self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). This was made possible by a grant from FEMA which totaled over $170,000 with a local match of approximately $9,000. Captain Scott Hazeltine was primarily responsible for the grant acquisition. Four vendors presented their equipment which was reviewed by a selection committee, which in the end selected the MSA line from 5-Alarm Fire in Delafield.

Gateway fire training back on track

After a few bumps, Gateway Technical College is on track to begin a fire medic program scheduled for fall 2017 in the Village of Waterford. Gateway is currently in the process of forming a contract with the village to pay $1,500 a month to use Station No. 1 located at 122 Second St., year-round indoors.

Washington County: Several crews respond to fire on Highway 83 in Hartford

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fire that took place on Highway 83, just south of Lee Road in Hartford early Saturday, May 20th. The sheriff’s office says shortly after 5 a.m., they received a report of smoke coming from a residence on Highway 83. Upon arrival, officials discovered a residence fully engulfed and heavy smoke coming from a 16-unit garage structure at the Oriole Pond Apartments.

Gas leak forces evacuation of Oconomowoc assisted living home

A gas leak late Friday night sparked an evacuation of dozens of people at an assisted living home in Oconomowoc. The Western Lakes Fire District responded to a report a gas leak at Azura Memory Care just after 11 p.m. All 42 residents were evacuated and taken to Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital while crews searched for the leak.

Columbus Firemen's Service Corp receives Sentry's Roundup for a Cause funds

Earlier this month managers at Columbus Sentry Market presented a check to Columbus Firemen’s Service Corp in the amount of $2,349.18 for the April Round-Up for a Cause program at Sentry. The Columbus Firemen’s Service Corp is a nonprofit organization that exists to provide various services to the Columbus Fire Department through a variety of fundraising activities.

Early morning fire damages vacant home on Milwaukee’s north side; arson suspected

Firefighters on Friday morning, May 19th responded to the scene of a vacant house fire on Milwaukee’s north side. The call came in around 2:30 a.m. It happened near 26th and Port Sunlight Way. According to officials, when crews arrived on scene there was fire going up the side of the building — and getting inside the home.

Deer-Grove, Cambridge EMS look to future

Fire damages Neenah basement

Fire damaged a basement in a single-family home Wednesday night. Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue was called to the 100 block of Courtney Court about 10:25 p.m. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which was confined to the basement. "There was some fire damage but more heavy smoke damage," said Assistant Chief Mike Sipin.

Mobile home park residents talk about Chetek twister’s trail of destruction

Ron Blomberg narrowly avoided the devastation Tuesday that claimed the life of his neighbor at Prairie Lake Estates mobile home park. Blomberg, 27, left his trailer home about 10 minutes before a tornado ripped through the grounds, destroying two-thirds of the park’s homes, at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Firetruck rides raise funds for Portage training center

The Portage Fire Department is kicking off the summer fundraising drive with firetruck rides Saturday morning. “We’re giving rides to kids … and adults,” said Portage Fire Inspector Craig Ratz. “You’re never too old for a firetruck ride.” The department will be bringing engines 3, 6, and 8, along with squad 2 to the parking lot of Walmart where it will be offering official Portage Fire Department T-shirts and rides on one of the trucks for $15.

One person confirmed dead, 25 injured in Chetek tornado

VIDEO: Authorities say the victim who died Tuesday when a tornado destroyed a mobile home park in northwestern Wisconsin was a 46-year-old man. At least 25 other people were injured when a storm leveled the Prairie Lake Estate Mobile Park on State Highway 53 between Chetek and Cameron. The National Weather Service reported a touchdown in the area just after 5:30 p.

Oconomowoc fire sends 2 to hospital

A fire Tuesday afternoon sent two people to the hospital. Firefighters were called to 834 Goldenview Court at about 2 p.m. May 16 for a report of a fire with two people trapped inside, according to Western Lakes Fire District Chief Brad Bowen. Upon arrival, crews noticed heavy black smoke coming from the rear of the home, according to a news release from the Western Lakes Fire District.
