Madison City Council to consider reimbursing citizens who win Police and Fire Commission claims

Madison City Council members are proposing a new ordinance to reimburse the legal fees accumulated by people who win claims against employees or officials before the Police and Fire Commission. “The council finds it is in the public interest and satisfies a public purpose to reimburse fees and costs of private citizens who successfully bring complaints before the Police and Fire Commission against city employees or officials,” the proposed ordinance states.

Manitowoc officers, firefighter honored by Eagles Club

Two officers from the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department and one Manitowoc firefighter were among those recently honored for their service by the Eagles Club. The banquet took place May 6 and the awards were presented to each recipient. Brad Olivera, a motor pump operator for the Manitowoc Fire Department, was awarded Firefighter of the Year for 2016 because of two incidents in which Olivera stepped up, even though he was off duty, according to a press release from the Manitowoc Fire Department.

Longtime Raymond Assistant Fire Chief Dale Mentink retires

Described as a “legend” by Raymond fire officials, Assistant Chief Dale Mentink retired last month after 55 years of service with the Raymond Volunteer Fire Department. “I enjoy serving the good people of the Town of Raymond. I did this mainly to help my neighbors, because I knew my family and I would need someone to help me if my house was on fire,” Mentink said.

One critically hurt in helicopter crash at Kenosha airport

A helicopter pilot suffered critical injuries Sunday after his aircraft crash at about 4:30 p.m. at Kenosha Regional Airport. The pilot, an unidentified male, was the only one on board, Kenosha Fire Department Chief Charles Leipzig said. A Flight for Life medical helicopter was called to transport the man, most likely to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, Leipzig said.

Update: Body of third victim recovered from Didion Milling explosion

VIDEO: Didion Milling released a statement Sunday afternoon that the local fire department and Columbia County Sheriff's Office have recovered the body of a worker killed in the plant explosion Wednesday night. Didion Milling said safety engineers recovered the body of 21-year-old Pawel Tordoff. His body was originally found Friday morning, but authorities delayed sending rescue personnel into the site until it was safe to make the recovery, the company said.

No injuries after car hits Ella's Deli in Madison

According to the Madison Fire Department, one person was taken to UW Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, after hitting Ella's Deli. Firefighters responded to the 2000 block of E. Washington Avenue, Ella's Deli around 12:00 noon. They found a vehicle had hit the entryway of Ella's Deli. Crews found no damage to the main structure of the restaurant.

One hurt, nine displaced by apartment fire in Black River Falls

One person was injured in a Saturday morning fire in an apartment above Murphy’s Pub, 123 Main St. The man, who had been in the apartment that caught fire, was found on the roof over the pub, suffering from an injured arm. He was treated on the scene by paramedics and then transported to Black River Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

Fire destroys Merton garage, two cars

VIDEO: A Friday morning fire in the Town of Merton damaged a home and destroyed a garage and the vehicles that were parked inside. Firefighters from the Merton Fire Department were called to the home on the County Highway E near Trumpet Lane at about 5:45 a.m. Additional help was later received from crews from the Village of Sussex, the Town of Lisbon, and the Village of Hartland, Lt.

A Wisconsin corn mill that exploded late Wednesday night was reprimanded by federal safety inspectors six years ago for not taking precautions against dust explosions, a major hazard in handling grain, records show. Firefighters also had responded to a fire at the facility two days before the blast, although it’s too soon to know whether the two incidents are related.

12 year-old boy in critical condition after being hit by a bus in Milwaukee

The Western Lakes Fire District responded for a school bus versus bicycle accident on North Main Street in Dousman just before 7:00 Thursday morning. A boy was riding his bike on North Main Street on the the sidewalk when he crossed Main Street and was hit by the school bus. Emergency officials were able to free the bicyclist who was trapped and take him to a local hospital in critical condition.

Sauk City man charged in apartment building arson

Police say a Sauk City man lit multiple fires in his apartment building after having disagreements with his landlord. Prosecutors have charged 46-year-old Kurt J. Haugen with two counts of felony arson for fires that took place in September and May at a Jackson Street apartment complex. Firefighters were called to the location May 5 after a resident reported smoke in a hallway.

VIDEO: One person was killed and several others injured in a late Wednesday explosion and fire at a corn milling plant in Columbia County. Windsurfer dead after being hit by boat on Lake Mendota

VIDEO: Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney confirms that a windsurfer has died after being hit by a boat. Mahoney says the surfer's body has been recovered. The identity of the surfer has not yet been released. The sheriff says the boater is being questioned and is cooperating with the investigation. Mahoney says there is no reason to suspect foul play was involved.

Wauwatosa: Westbound I-94 reopens after crash and fire

A collision between a truck carrying bottled products and a car in the Zoo Interchange caused a fire and created traffic backups in Wauwatosa Wednesday afternoon, May 31. No injuries have been reported. Officials have reopened westbound Interstate 94 after it was closed for over an hour due to the vehicle and truck fire.

"Slow" New Berlin Man Charged with Arson, Family Questions Confession

VIDEO: A New Berlin man has been charged with five counts of arson, including one count for a large industrial fire that happened in Muskego last Friday. But the suspect's family tells CBS 58's Jacob Kittilstad that they "don't know" if he actually did it. This suspect is 31-years-old Adam Erickson. Before his arrest he had been living with his family in the home he spent his entire life in.

Dogs rescued from Milwaukee's north side house fire

Firefighters from the Milwaukee Fire Department rescued eight dogs from a burning house on Milwaukee’s north side Tuesday night. Two other dogs, however, died, overcome by smoke from the fire. The fire was reported around 9:50 PM in a one-and-a-half story home at N. 102nd Street and W Vera Avenue. Firefighters put the fire out within 10 minutes but spent an additional amount of time looking through the home for the family’s pets.

Madison will consider proposal to reimburse legal fees of citizens filing successful claims with Police and Fire Commission

In what may be a first in the state, Madison City Council members are proposing an ordinance to reimburse legal fees of citizens who bring successful claims against city employees or officials before the Police and Fire Commission. The proposal by lead sponsor Ald. Shiva Bidar-Sielaff and at least seven others also would give the council discretion to adjust reimbursement for a police or fire chief who faced multiple complaints with mixed outcomes before the commission, which has the authority to hire, fire and discipline sworn police and fire employees.

Fire Causes Damage at Assisted Living Facility in Bufflehead

Fire has caused $20,000 in damage at a Bellevue assisted living facility. Crews were called to Bufflehead 1, 2084 Bufflehead Lane, at 4:06 pm Tuesday for a report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found a working fire on the exterior of the garage. Due to winds around 25 miles per hour, it was spreading into the garage.
