$5 million Wisconsin Dells dorm fire determined to be arson

The Jan. 25 fire that destroyed the Wilderness Resort dormitory under construction was determined to be an arson by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms. The Wisconsin Arson Insurance Council is offering a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved, according to a press release.

Milwaukee first responders moving out of a city they serve

VIDEO: New numbers on how many city employees have moved out of Milwaukee since the law changed more than four years ago. A Milwaukee Alderman calls it troubling for the city, especially with the biggest numbers being in public safety. About 30% of police officers and 35% of firefighters live outside the city.

Firefighters battle blaze at Marinette County business

Probation ordered for setting Eau Claire house fire

An Eau Claire man will spend two years on probation for setting a fire at his former residence. Jayson R. Harding, 27, 2007 Second St., pleaded no contest recently in Eau Claire County Court to an amended misdemeanor count of negligent handling of burning material. He was originally charged with a felony count of arson.

Fontana rescue boat a family's answer to tragedy

On the night Mark Reninger’s snowmobile vanished beneath the icy waters of Geneva Lake, conditions were so treacherous that rescuers had difficulty reaching the accident scene. Reninger did not survive. Now his family has raised money to equip the Fontana Fire Department with a high-powered, sophisticated rescue boat to make future such rescues less challenging.

Teenage Grafton firefighter steps up to save life of man suffering medical emergency at Shopko

VIDEO: Grafton's youngest certified firefighter stepped up at the local Shopko when a co-worker had a medical emergency. That man, thanks to the teenager's quick response, will survive. All of Daniel Dowty's equipment is brand new, untouched by smoke. His time with the Grafton Fire Department, however, has prepared him for a critical moment that happened just weeks ago.

Fire takes Sauk County Board member's home

A Sauk County Board member is safe after his house was destroyed by a fire early Tuesday morning. Baraboo Fire Chief Kevin Stieve said Supervisor Tom Kriegl was in Madison around 3 a.m. when crews were called to his home along County Highway W in the town of Greenfield. Stieve said the fire was difficult to extinguish because the house — which was a total loss — had partially collapsed.

Truck goes through ice on Lake Winnebago, driver escapes

Firefighters are reminding people of the dangers of going out onto the ice after a truck sank into Lake Winnebago Tuesday morning. According to a post on the fire department's Facebook page, the rescue happened near the mouth of the Fox River. Firefighters say that's one of the most dangerous areas of the lake, since the current makes for thinner ice than on other areas of the lake.

Morning Fire Races Through Calumet County Business

Firefighters battled the flames in the Forest Junction area of Calumet County. The fire broke out early today (TUESDAY) right off Highway 10, in the area of Highway 32/57. The fire is located at Legacy Automotive. No injuries reported....no word on how the fire started. Roads were closed for time while crews got the fire under control.

Town of Burlington Fire Department bids farewell to 103 years of combined service

Ed Umnus and Tom Riggs were not about to let their pride stand in the way of letting someone else take a turn at leadership of the Town of Burlington Fire Department. They might have been willing to stay on the 25-member paid-on-call department for another couple of years, but when another name — in addition to his — was nominated to be chief at the annual election of officers, Umnus decided he would instead step down after 28 years with the department and the past six as chief.

Superior firefighter injured fighting garage blaze

One firefighter suffered a minor injury battling a garage fire in Superior Monday morning. The Superior Fire Department responded to 2217 Lackawanna Ave. for a report of a structure fire Monday morning, according to a release from acting Battalion Chief Howard Huber. The units found a detached garage with heavy smoke showing and flames visible through the windows.

Police, firefighters work together to try to save 4 dogs, 4 cats, bird from fire in Greenfield

VIDEO: A home in Greenfield filled with smoke, and those inside were helpless to get out. Police and firefighters are being credited for the heroic rescue that didn't involve any humans. Investigators say no one was home when the fire started, but inside the home, there were four dogs, four cats and a bird.

St. Croix County: Man pleads guilty in Roberts school arson

The man who set fire to a Roberts school pleaded guilty to a charge of arson Friday in St. Croix County Circuit Court, and seven other charges against him were dropped, according to court records. Justin Walter Nelson, 25, of Roberts, started a fire at St. Croix Central Elementary School after breaking into the building in the early morning hours of April 30 in an apparent burglary attempt.

‘Incredible young man:’ Milwaukee boy who died saving family members from arson fire receives Carnegie Medal

Honored for his act of heroism, a young boy from Milwaukee was posthumously awarded the Carnegie Medal Sunday, Jan. 28 for risking his life to save others. With only 18 civilians recognized nationally this year, he's the youngest in the nation to receive this honor. Family members gathered Sunday morning at Hephatha Lutheran Church, where they honored the Lord and Kevin Little.

Northern Door first responder believes profession is ripe for influx of women

Amanda Larson was co-recipient of the 2017 First Responder of the Year award presented by Sister Bay Liberty Grove Fire Chief Chris Hecht. Amanda says that she has never had a problem working a field traditionally held by men. According to the American Community Survey (ACS) Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) database, approximately 30 percent of emergency medical technicians & paramedics in the US are women.

Slight changes made to South Shore-Caledonia fire assist policy

At a recent meeting with Mount Pleasant’s Fire/EMS Oversight Board, South Shore Fire Chief Robert Stedman was asked why South Shore’s personnel and vehicle from Station 10, located in the Franksville area, responded to fire calls throughout all of the Village of Caledonia. Meanwhile, Caledonia’s Station 10 personnel and vehicles only responded to calls within Station 10’s service area, which dips below Spring Street in Mount Pleasant and out west to the interstate.

Longtime La Crosse firefighter promoted to Assistant Chief of Operations

First responders gather in Milwaukee for Wisconsin EMS Association Conference

Walsh completes time as Dells fire chief

After more than 20 years of service and over five years as fire chief at the Kilbourn Fire Department, Chief Scott Walsh is getting ready to move on. “I kind of lost the desire and didn’t feel I was able to give 100 percent of my time to the fire department,” he said. “You get to that point where it’s time to let the younger guys and the guys coming up take over and carry on the tradition.

Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, teamwork key to navigating recent Sheboygan fires

On the evening of Friday, Jan. 12, as citizens began their weekend, the City of Sheboygan Fire Department began a different activity. For the second time in the department’s history, a MABAS alarm was activated. MABAS is an acronym for Mutual Aid Box Alarm System and it started in northern Illinois in the late 1960’s.
