Racine County firefighters back to work after health scares

Last summer, Alex Hagen struggled to pull his socks up and Rudi Betancourt strained to walk even a few steps. Hagen, a Caledonia firefighter, battled Ewing’s sarcoma, a type of bone cancer, while South Shore firefighter Betancourt was ravaged by Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer that affects the lymph nodes.

State disaster agency plans for climate change

In a shift from the practice of two other state agencies, Wisconsin emergency management officials have released new information on climate change and its implications for the state. In a report that it posted online last week, the state Division of Emergency Management devoted extensive attention to climate change and how a warming planet could spur natural disasters such as floods, drought and forest fires.

Utah firefighter-paramedic killed in head-on vehicle accident

An Intermountain Life Flight paramedic was killed and a nurse seriously injured in a head-on automobile crash Sunday morning near Strawberry Reservoir. The victim was identified as Tyson L. Mason, 29, of Plain City, a firefighter/paramedic for the Salt Lake City Fire Department who also worked part time for Life Flight.

California fire chief threatens to sue resident in contentious meeting

With social media, Oklahoma City fire spokesman promotes safety, lets residents in on the action

6 Chicago police officers suspended for mishandling crash involving fire deputy

Six Chicago Police officers have been suspended for giving the third-highest ranking member of the Chicago Fire Department favored treatment after the fire deputy crashed his city-owned SUV near Lake Shore Drive in Lincoln Park. Police Supt. Eddie Johnson suspended all six officers for “improper processing and reporting procedures” in connection with the April 20, 2016 crash involving former Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas.

Dozens of firefighters battle overnight barn fire in Howard

VIDEO: Brown County sheriff's officials said crews responded to a fire on the 1500 block of Pinecrest Road just after midnight, Sunday. The Brown County Sheriff's Office and nine fire departments responded, including dozens of firefighters. The fire chief said multiple units responded because fire crews did not have access to a water source.

Three-Alarm Fire Causes Serious Damage to Milwaukee Furniture Store

Telephone reports began to come in saying that the furniture store inside the strip mall near 14th and Center was on fire. Upon arrival, The Milwaukee Fire Department saw heavy smoke an attempted to make an interior attack.

Lake Geneva captain's focus is on fire department service

Following in her father’s footsteps, Capt. Zina Opper has been a firefighter/EMT in Lake Geneva since 1995, and she’s served fulltime with the Fox Lake, Illinois, Fire Department for 16 years. Opper was the featured firefighter by Fire Chief John Peters in the department’s recent monthly report to the Lake Geneva Police and Fire Commission.
