The city of Charleston has a plan in the works to create a new Department of Public Safety to oversee the police and fire departments, and Police Chief Greg Mullen could be promoted to lead it.
The concept was announced in a written release Friday.
Next week, Tecklenburg plans to ask the City Council's Public Safety Committee to study the feasibility of such a department.

The treasurer of the Akron firefighters union has been charged with felony theft and is in jail in North Carolina, arrested as he fled Akron after the charges were filed on Thursday.
Joe Ruhlin, 40, treasurer of Local 330, is accused of stealing perhaps as much as $100,000 from the union. The exact figure has not been determined because the union and investigators have just begun combing the books.

The city has agreed to a $250,000 settlement in a lawsuit by a volunteer firefighter accusing Lynden and its assistant fire chief of discrimination and creating a hostile work environment.

A fire on Sunday morning destroyed a three-story building that was home to a diner and apartments in Butler. Emergency dispatchers said the fire was reported shortly after 9 a.m. at a building on Center Avenue that houses Hutch's diner and two floors of apartments.
One firefighter was reported caught in a flashover by the rapidly spreading flames and exited through a window and onto the roof of a neighboring building, where other firefighters helped him to safety.

Firefighters at Fort Bragg’s Fire Station No. 7 have been complaining for years that their building is deplorable — even sickening.
The roof leaks. Exhaust from the engine trucks wafts into sleeping quarters. Carpets are soaked with water when it rains. Holes in walls are covered by steel sheets. The problems have been documented by building inspectors, federal occupational safety regulators and Fort Bragg leaders since at least 2014, yet the building continues to fall into disrepair.

Cudahy Police report that arrests have been made in connection with a fire in a vacant tannery. No details about the arrests are available, but a news release is expected to be issued later today.

PHOTO - Milwaukee Police is investigating an accident on 8th and Hadley. Fire crews got called out reports of a car that flipped on a seemingly quiet neighborhood street.
When crews arrived, they found one man inside the car.
“I was scared, I was hoping no one was hurt in the vehicle. That was the first thing," said Calvin Moore, a witness.

Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue, the Fond du Lac County Public Health Department and Agnesian HealthCare are once again joining forces to launch a new program with help from the Agnesian HealthCare Foundation.
The one-year pilot, being called Innovative Mobile Services Program, was implemented March 21 and engages Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue paramedics with people in the community who have requested to be in the program or have been referred by a doctor, pharmacist or other person in the medical field.

Firefighters on Friday morning, March 24th responded to the scene of a house fire on Watertown Road near Pewaukee Road in the City Pewaukee. The call came in around 4:30 a.m. The fire was first reported by the homeowner to the Waukesha County Communications Center. When crews arrived on scene, additional assistance was requested from the Village of Sussex, Town of Delafield, and City of Waukesha Fire Departments.

They’ve been talking since 2015 about a three-way merger. Now the Deer-Grove, Cambridge and Marshall EMS departments are taking a significant step toward that possibility. The West Salem Volunteer Fire Departments are seeking volunteers to bolster their daytime coverage. Fire department spokesperson Scott Johnson said The fire department is close to capacity during the evening hours but lacks the necessary volunteers for adequate daytime coverage. “Unfortunately, our daytime coverage is slim as most members work outside of West Salem,” he said.

One Sun Prairie firefighter received minor injuries and a television journalist was shot with a pellet gun while fire department crews were responding to a duplex fire in the 5500 block of Larry Lane in the Town of Burke. The firefighter was treated and released at the scene. Four residents of the duplex escaped the badly damaged building.
