London fire brigade boss: ‘It was a massive risk, but it’s our job to go in’

Dany Cotton is used to receiving bad news in the small hours. As commissioner of the London fire brigade, she is one of three senior officers on the brigade’s rota who will answer a call alerting them to a major incident. Last Tuesday night it was Cotton’s turn on rota. She was six months into her job running the country’s largest fire service and had almost three decades as a firefighter under her belt.

New York fire department will send out heavy rescue truck less

Two firefighters assigned to the city’s fire department heavy rescue truck are sent out several times a day on all kinds of calls, from helping out senior citizens injured in falls to victims suffering from heart attacks or are involved in a serious motor vehicle crashes. But the rescue truck soon won’t be going out on quite so many calls.

Cottage Grove festival supports volunteer firefighters for 86th year

VIDEO: Cottage Grove firefighters are getting some help from the community this weekend. The volunteer fire department spent all weekend at Fireman's Park for the Cottage Grove Fireman's Festival's 86th year. All the money raised at the four-day festival goes to the fire department. Fire officials use the money to pay for recruiting new volunteer firefighters and buying new equipment to help the community.

Police: 39-year-old woman in custody after arson caught on camera in Milwaukee

VIDEO: Milwaukee police said Sunday, June 18th a woman caught on camera setting fire to a home near 12th and Wright on Friday is now in custody. The case against the 39-year-old woman will be presented to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the coming days. The family of the woman on Saturday urged her to turn herself in.

Dive crews rescue 3 men after boat overturns in Port Washington

A Sunday morning fishing trip turned into a tense emergency rescue after a boat overturned in Port Washington. Fire crews responded to the city department’s first water rescue of the year, and it came with some challenges. Scores of dive crew members with Port Washington Fire and the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Department worked to bring the boaters back to safety.

Employees evacuated from Eau Claire building

Progress Pushes Charleston Firefighters Forward after Sofa Super Store Tragedy

Experts warned government against cladding material used on London high-rise

The government’s building safety experts warned last year that the drive for greater energy efficiency meant more and more buildings are being wrapped in materials that could go up in flames. In a report compiled before the Grenfell Tower disaster on Wednesday, the Building Research Establishment, which works for the Department of Communities and Local Government on fire investigations, said attempts to innovate with insulation were leading to an “increase in the volume of potentially combustible materials being applied” to buildings.

'Hospital on wheels' aims for faster stroke treatment in metro Phoenix

Four Fond du Lac Firefighters Sworn In For New Roles With Department

Ashippun Fire Department to celebrate 100 years

When the Ashippun Fire Department was created in 1917, the only equipment it had was an Obenchains Boyers chemical six-man hand pump with 150 feet of hose, some buckets and ladders. In the first half of the 20th century, it took the whole community to fight fires in Ashippun, said Fire Chief Deonne Eske.

Kenosha alderman pushes for open burning in city

Kenosha aldermen are working to make open burning legal in city limits, despite strong opposition from the fire chief. An ordinance sponsored by Ald. Dan Prozanski would allow open burning under certain conditions. Prozanski, who represents District 14, said his constituents want the freedom to use outdoor fire pits and fireplaces on their property.

Fire crews rescue tubers from river in Eau Claire

Two people tubing Wednesday afternoon on the Chippewa River were rescued by Eau Claire firefighters. The Fire Department was called at 12:25 p.m. on a report of two people in distress on flotation devices. Firefighters located the two people about 30 feet off the riverbank near UW-Eau Claire. Fire crews used throw ropes to bring the people to shore.

Michigan fire chief killed while responding to crash along interstate
