Driver extricated from car hanging off Kaukauna bridge

PHOTO: No one was injured after a car was found hanging off the Veterans Memorial Bridge Wednesday afternoon. Rescue crews say they were called to the bridge at 1:15 p.m. Upon arrival, one of the passengers was able to get out of the car. Another person was unable to due to the position of the car. Firefighters used a 9,000-pound side winch to stabilize the car and safely extricate the driver.

Spring Valley mourns loss of longtime fire chief

There is a gaping hole in the fabric of the Spring Valley community after the unexpected death of longtime Fire Chief Terry Shafer, who died Saturday, Feb. 25 while on a weekend trip with his brothers. He was 62. Shafer joined Spring Valley Fire in 1979 and began wearing the white chief’s helmet in 1986.

Lightning strikes home in Kenosha, starts fire

VIDEO: A lightning strike started a fire Tuesday night in a Kenosha home. A Kenosha Fire Department battalion chief confirmed the strike on 47th Avenue near 42nd Street. "We did have a line of severe thunderstorms that came through the area with multiple lightning strikes," Battalion Chief Matthew Haerter said.

A family affair: Baraboo firefighter celebrates 40 years

Baraboo Fire Department Deputy Chief Steve Pointon thought he was about to attend a regular staff meeting Monday evening. Instead, he entered the garage to see friends and family standing alongside his fellow firefighters. They were gathered around a cake, ready to congratulate Pointon on his 40 years with the department.

"It's a Huge Concern:" West Bend Arson Suspect Arrested

VIDEO: A man wanted for starting fires at three West Bend businesses has been arrested. Police announced the arrest Tuesday. The most recent fire happened behind Mountain Outfitters on Sunday, when police say the man started a trailer filled with cardboard boxes on fire. "I came out and checked it out, and it was pretty ugly and dirty and damaged," says Mary Gamerdinger, who works at a non-profit next door.

Town of Mitchell fire draws multiple departments

Firefighters from multiple area departments were working Tuesday afternoon to put out a structure fire at a residence in southwestern Sheboygan County. Emergency personnel were dispatched around 1:35 p.m. to the fire at N8746 County Highway W, in the Town of Mitchell, the county sheriff’s office reported.

Chippewa County barn catches fire

A barn caught fire Monday in Chippewa County east of Colfax. Firefighters responded to the fire at about 3:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Highway T and Highway B near the town of Howard, according to the Chippewa Fire District. Onalaska fire departments in need of volunteer/paid-on-call firefighters

VIDEO: While full-time career firefighters are out on a call, other emergencies still need to be covered. Sometimes those are handled by volunteer or paid-on-call positions. However, area fire departments say those positions are becoming more and more difficult to retain. "Families are just too busy these days," said Assistant Chief Troy Gudie of the Onalaska Fire Department.

Beloit sees increase in fire and medical calls for service

VIDEO: In the past year Beloit Fire Department has responded to more than 400 calls compared to the previous year. Just last month, they saw a 100 call increase. The Beloit fire chief says aging baby boomers, flu season and people that may not have health insurance are all contributing factors to the spike in calls.

Ten people displaced by fire Sunday night in Madison

VIDEO: Ten people were displaced because of an apartment building fire on the east side of Madison Sunday night. Dane County Communications tells 27 News the call about a fire at 743 North Thompson Drive came in just before 11 p.m. Sunday. Callers told officials there was smoke in the back of the building on the second floor.

Green Bay house fire leaves four without home

VIDEO: An afternoon house fire has left four people in search of a new home. The fire started just before noon on Sunday in the 800 block of Ridge Road in Green Bay. When firefighters arrived heavy smoke was coming from the home. Five additional units were called to the scene to help battle the blaze.

Fire Damages Eau Claire Home

VIDEO: Firefighters estimate 70-thousand dollars of damage to an Eau Claire home after a fire last night. The fire broke out around 9:30 last night in the one-thousand block of summit street on Eau Claire’s north side. Then crews arrived, they found smoke and fire coming from the home. According to Eau Claire fire and rescue, the main fire was knocked down; however, crews stayed on scene throughout the night to monitor conditions.

No injuries in early morning fire in Bellevue

VIDEO: No one was hurt during an early morning fire in the village of Bellevue on Saturday. Fire crews were called to a home in the 3100 block of Warm Springs Drive at 2:15 a.m. Chief Jack Mlnarik with Bellevue Fire and Rescue says fire was coming out of the chimney of the home and when firefighters began to make entry, they heard a loud explosion and backed away.

Lightning suspected in several early-morning Waukesha house fires

Authorities suspect that lightning may have sparked several house fires in southeast Wisconsin early Friday morning. The first was reported at about 2 a.m. on the 1700 block of Rockridge Way in Waukesha. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find people already outside and a small fire at the front of the home, on the second floor above the porch, a department spokesman said.

Holmen fire shake-up improves response

Despite the danger and disruption to property owners and renters, a couple of recent structure fires turned out to be proving grounds of the Holmen Area Fire Department reorganization and its improved ability to respond. At the Holmen Area Fire District Association Board’s Feb. 16 meeting, Assistant Chief Bill Bulawa reported on the fire department’s response to a kitchen fire in the town of Holland and its assistance to the Onalaska Fire Department when that department was battling an apartment complex fire.

Portage woman accused of starting fire waits for chance to enter plea

A Portage woman who has been in jail since December, accused of attempted arson, will have to wait another 30 days before her attorney can address what she said are underlying mental health issues. Linda Fuller, 58, is charged with felony attempted arson of a building, criminal damage to property and two counts of bail jumping following an incident on the evening of Dec.

Crews struggle to fight Portage County fire

VIDEO: Muddy ground made it hard early Thursday morning for fire trucks to get into a driveway of a home on fire. Fire crews fought the fire for at least three hours, citing the ground conditions and age of the home as reasons it was difficult to extinguish, according to Rosholt Fire District. One person at the house made it out safely before crews arrived, according to officials at the scene.

Fire agencies battle restaurant fire in Dodgeville

VIDEO: The Dodgeville Fire Chief tells 27 News it's still too early to say whether the fire at Barn 23 is considered suspicious or not. They will investigate all possibilities. Fire Chief Brian Whitehouse says still, an Iowa County arson investigation team will be working with the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation to look into the fire, due to the value of the property.
