Middleton house considered total loss after fire; no one hurt

Firefighters responded to a house fire in Middleton early Monday morning. Dane County Sheriff Deputies said the call came in at 3:39 a.m. in the 3800 block of Bay Laurel Lane. When crews first arrived, they found flames in the garage that were spreading to the rest of the home. Firefighters said the house is a loss, but all of the family and pets made it out safely.

'By the grace of God': Madison homeowner's quick actions save his house and himself after grill fire

Madison resident Jonathan Woods has just minor burns on his arm to show after his grill caught fire earlier this week. Woods suspects a faulty regulator was the reason for the fire, which shot from beneath the grill into his face before overtaking the grill itself. “I came out, opened the grill up, looked underneath, opened the tank up, listened very carefully just to make sure there was no leak or anything,” Woods said Saturday.

Wildfire fire risk remains high across large portions of Wisconsin

Don't let the green leaves on the trees fool you. Wisconsin is still facing drier-than-normal conditions, making wildfires more of a risk, and there are steps people can take to avoid inadvertently sparking one. Some areas of the state have seen rainfalls seven inches below average this year, said Marc Sass, a forester with the Department of Natural Resources.

Follow Up: Madison's Fire Department Tests Out Hybrid Fire Truck

A fire truck that performs in much the same way as its diesel-powered counterparts but boasts zero net carbon emissions is currently being piloted by the Madison Fire Department. Although the Pierce Volterra zero-emissions pumper won't be ready for a full rollout until about 2023, the Madison Fire Department is partnering with the truck's maker, Pierce Manufacturing, a subsidiary of the Oshkosh Corp.

Petition drafted for towns under Milton's joint fire department to join Edgerton Fire Protection District

The Milton Town Board during a special meeting Thursday night received a draft petition from the town attorney and board chairman in which the town of Milton asks the Edgerton Fire Protection District Board to allow the town to join the district. The draft could be modified to change the name of the town in the document so the others currently covered by the Milton Joint Fire Commission—Lima, Johnstown and Harmony—could use it, too.

Fond du Lac firefighters battle fire at smoke shop

Fond du Lac firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire at a smoke shop Thursday morning. At 7:39 a.m., Fond du Lac Fire Rescue responded to Big Jay’s Smoke Shop at 111 S. Main Street. Crews found smoke inside the three-story mixed use building. Fire was located on the first floor inside the smoke shop.

'I'm very fortunate to be here today': Platteville burn victim shares his story about fire safety

A Platteville man is sharing his experiences with fire as a way of teaching fire safety during holiday weekends and summer months. Scott Travis was only 9-years-old when he had his first experience with fire. Attending the UW-Platteville homecoming parade, a friend of Travis threw a firecracker on one of the nearby floats.

Green Bay Metro Fire Department Captain retiring after 35 years

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department is congratulating one of its captains as he prepares to retire Thursday. Captain Jon “JFred” Fredrickson has served the community in the City of Green Bay and the Village of Allouez and Bellevue for the last 35 years, beginning his career on March 26th, 1986 as an EMT Paramedic.

Woman charged with killing grandmother, starting house fire

A woman is accused of killing her grandmother by suffocation and setting her house in Fort Atkinson on fire days later. Elizabeth Durkee told investigators the 72-year-old woman was in ill health, spent most of her time in bed and wanted to die, so on June 7 she covered her grandmother's nose and mouth with duct tape and she eventually stopped moving, according to a criminal complaint filed in Jefferson County.

Double play for Egg Harbor Firefighters

The Egg Harbor Fire Department was kept busy with a pair of blazes still under investigation on Wednesday. A little after 11 a.m., firefighters headed to a trailer fire on West Carlsville Road where they found it fully engulfed. Egg Harbor Fire Chief Andy Staats said it appears it started in a back bedroom but no cause has been determined.

Two families displaced by Madison apartment fire; sprinklers credited with limiting damage

Two families were displaced from their westside apartments Tuesday night after a fire broke out in one of the units. Madison fire officials said they responded to the 7900 block of Tree Lane around 10:15 p.m. for a water flow alarm. When crews arrived at the apartment complex, they found the fire alarm ringing and residents evacuating the 45-unit building.

Eight displaced by fire in Green Bay

Eight people were displaced by a fire at a three-family home in Green Bay Tuesday night. There are no reports of injuries. At about 8:48 p.m., Green Bay Metro firefighters were called to 909 Day Street on the city’s east side. They arrived to find heavy smoke, heat and fire on the second floor of the home.

'Biggest fire I've ever seen': Wisconsin firefighters help battle Rockton chemical fire

A large fire south of the Wisconsin border is still burning more than a day later. On Monday, Illinois fire officials called in reinforcements to fight the chemical fire at a plant in Rockton, Illinois. Kenosha County burn ban, drought means high fire risk

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warns that the risk of fire is high due to dry conditions. Firefighters worked to put out a grass fire in Kenosha Tuesday, June 15. "We haven’t had any rain in the past four weeks," said Guy Santelli, Kenosha Fire Department. The Kenosha Fire Department is gearing up for what could be a busy couple of weeks.

Fort Atkinson fire death, woman charged

A 36-year-old Fort Atkinson woman has been arrested and charged in connection to a deadly June 11 fire. Elizabeth Durkee is charged with first-degree intentional homicide, strangulation and suffocation, arson of a building and mutilating a corpse. The suspicious death and residential fire investigation also involved a statewide Amber Alert late Friday night, June 10 that resolved with the safe recovery of the child, shortly after the alert was issued.

Thiensville trustees continue discussion on firefighter, EMT shortages

Training police officers in emergency medical services and creating a separate countywide paramedic department were among the ideas to come out of an open house that Thiensville village officials hosted last month on the Ozaukee County fire and EMS study. Drought-like conditions, series of fires, lead to immediate burning bans in southeastern Wisconsin

Drought-like conditions and a series of recent brush fires led local fire officials to declare an immediate ban on outside burning in municipalities in southeastern Wisconsin. The ban was ordered Monday morning, effective immediately, in the City of Kenosha, Village of Pleasant Prairie, the Village and Town of Somers, Town of Paris, Village of Salem Lakes and Town of Randall.

Stingray's Bar and Grill in Arbor Vitae Catches Fire

Fire early Monday morning destroyed an Arbor Vitae tavern that was originally built around a rail car. Arbor Vitae Fire Chief Mike Van Meter said they got the 9-1-1 call at 12:41 a.m. Upon the first unit’s arrival, the back of the Stingrays Bar and Grill was fully engulfed in flames, he said. Responding mutual aid units came from as far as Eagle River, which sent its ladder truck.

Green Bay Metro Fire Department creates buzz by rescuing bees, hive

Apartment fire in Madison displaces 14 people, causes $100,000 in damages

A fire broke out in a Moorland Road apartment complex on Saturday afternoon. According to a report, Madison firefighters saw smoke coming from the 40-unit building when they responded to the fire at 4:52 p.m. Residents reported that the fire was caused by unattended cooking grease. In total, fourteen people were displaced by the fire, including nine adults and five children.
