California man picks the wrong 'house' to break into; threatens firefighters

A 23-year-old man picked the wrong Stockton house to break into Monday morning. Jamal Davis, who told authorities he was living under a downtown freeway bridge, allegedly chose one of the busiest firehouses in the city to burglarize. After he was discovered inside Station 2 shortly after 4 a.m., firefighters chased him outside and secured his location for police, who responded quickly.

How fire departments can better serve the elderly

One of the primary responsibilities of every fire department is to understand and best serve the community that supports it. This mission is one of the primary reasons for promoting diversity among department members — to better represent and understand the needs of those served. But there is one demographic that, with rare exception, will never be included among active firefighters, despite a disproportionate involvement with emergency services agencies.

Four Colorado third-grade girls are fire chiefs for a day

New Jersey volunteer firefighter dies during maintenance duty

A volunteer firefighter died Sunday after becoming entangled in a fallen ladder. USFA reported that Alfred A. Stewart, 79, with the West Milford Volunteer Fire Company #6, reported to the station for a company drill. He stayed at the station to perform maintenance duties while other members attended the drill.

Alabama mayor breaks silence over locked up fire stations

It's a follow up to a story FOX10 News told you Thursday night about the controversial and confusing shut down of fire stations in Semmes. Mayor Judy Hale has broken her silence. At a news conference Friday afternoon, Hale blamed the Semmes City Council for what she's calling a "bad move." She explained that now, the city fire department and the volunteer fire department will be separate.

Man charged with deaths of 3 Pittsburgh firefighters now faces federal indictment

A retrial of a man accused in state charges of setting a 1995 fire that killed three Pittsburgh firefighters could be moving to federal court now that a grand jury has indicted Gregory Brown Jr. The federal grand jury indictment, returned Nov. 1 and unsealed Friday, charged Brown, 39, with malicious destruction of property by fire resulting in death.

Maine firefighter car-washing flap signals bigger issues

With less than a week before final votes are cast in what is the most bizarre election I remember, I was pretty sure I'd seen and heard it all. There were certainly no surprises left. Then along came this gem out of Wiscasset, Maine. Alabama firefighters locked out of stations attempt to get equipment back

Female Fire Captain files suit against Salt Lake City, mayor and former chief

The first female battalion chief for the Salt Lake City Fire Department has filed a whistleblower lawsuit in 3rd District Court against the municipality, claiming workplace retaliation for highlighting practices by top brass that include alleged fraud, state fire-code violations and cover-ups. Martha Ellis, a 21-year veteran firefighter, was demoted May 3 to captain from her previous position of division chief of logistics.

Baltimore man ordered to pay $1M for puncturing fire hose during April 2015 riots

A 22-year-old Baltimore man has been ordered to pay $1 million in restitution and serve 250 community service hours for puncturing a fire hose during the April 27 riots, prosecutors announced Thursday. Gregory Lee Butler, Jr. (a/k/a Greg Baly) will also serve three years of supervised release, after a judge gave him credit for five weeks served.

Fire Academy director in San Antonio placed on leave

The San Antonio Fire Department has placed on paid administrative leave the head of the agency’s training academy, city and department officials said. “We can confirm that Assistant Chief Joe Jones has been placed on leave,” said city spokesman Jeff Coyle. “But it’s an ongoing personnel matter so we will have no further comment.

Former Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Hairston dies

Harold B. Hairston, 76, Philadelphia's first African American fire commissioner, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, at his West Mount Airy home. Circumstances of his death were not available late Tuesday. Commissioner Hairston was appointed head of the Fire Department in 1992 by Mayor Ed Rendell and served for 12 years until he retired in 2004.

Former New York fire department treasurer admits stealing $1M

The former treasurer for the Patterson Fire Department has pleaded guilty to federal charges he stole more than $1.1 million from the department to support his personal businesses and live a lavish lifestyle. U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara announced the plea by Albert Melin on Wednesday. Melin's plea concludes a nearly year-long investigation that included Bharara's office, state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli's office, the Internal Revenue Service's criminal investigation division, the FBI and New York State Police.

Accounting mishap led to $1.2M shortfall for Colorado fire agency, report finds

Internal accounting errors led to a $1.15 million budget shortfall for the Boulder Rural Fire Protection District in 2015, a gap district officials knew about but didn't understand — or disclose — when they asked voters to approve a $1 million tax increase last year. Those are the findings of a report by financial investigator James Davis, who was retained by the fire district's board of directors to investigate the budget shortfall.
