Minnesota town in shock at death of fire chief in tractor accident

Mike Kehren, Goodhue's fire chief and member of the Lions and Goodhue School Board, was killed early Monday when he fell off the tow bar between two hay wagons and was run over, according to Mike Lodermeier, a former fire chief and a member of the department. "The whole town is in shock," said Dick Banidt, a fire captain and lifelong friend of Kehren, 58.

Ohio town forced to layoff nearly 2 dozen firefighters due to budget deficit

West Virginia fire station destroyed in fire

Utah firefighters rescue woman after stumbling into man allegedly hanging her

Firefighters responding to reports of a grass fire in Parleys Canyon may have saved a woman's life after they happened to come across a man who they say was trying to hang her. 6 New Jersey firefighters hospitalized from warehouse chemical exposure

Six firefighters were hospitalized Tuesday after being exposed to a "chemical haze" emitted from a warehouse on Port Carteret Drive, officials said. Borough firefighters responding to the warehouse around 2 a.m. found smoke, but no flames, said Carteret fire Chief Mark Hruska. "It was smoke from a chemical reaction," he said.

Arsonist kicks in door, sets fire to Montana rescue truck, fire hall

Appellate court rules that New York firefighters can arbitrate staffing cuts

A state appeals court ruled last week that City of Lockport firefighters are entitled to state arbitration on the issue of the reduction of staffing on each shift resulting from the abolition of the city’s ambulance service in September 2014. The Appellate Division of State Supreme Court on Friday unanimously upheld a December 2014 ruling by State Supreme Court Justice Frank Caruso that the city was not allowed to stop the arbitration sought by the firefighters union, but it emphasized that it was not taking sides in the dispute over whether the city was allowed by the union contract to cut staffing and do away with city ambulances.

Retired Massachusetts lieutenant charged with raping part-time firefighter

A 51-year-old retired Lakeville Fire Department lieutenant was indicted Friday on charges he supplied a part-time Lakeville firefighter with alcohol and then raped and assaulted him on two separate occasions. A Plymouth County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Thomas W. Whirling flames trapped unsuspecting Arizona hotshots, report says

Six wildfire hotshots working a low-intensity fire suddenly found themselves in a whirl of flame and debris Tuesday, forcing them to deploy their emergency fire shelters and trapping them for 15 minutes, according to an investigative report the Bureau of Indian Affairs released Sunday. Memphis Loses Third Firefighter in Off-duty Incident

A Memphis firefighter died in an off-duty incident Monday, marking the third such fatality in the department in recent weeks. According to an official of the firefighters union, Tina Mathenia, 46, was a 15-year veteran of the department. Racially charged Facebook post gets Massachusetts firefighter fired

A massive backyard party in Freetown that drew around 1,000 people prompted a local firefighter to rant on Facebook. Data: High-performance CPR works

Longtime firefighter Mike Soltwisch says he is a lot more tired after doing CPR today than he was several years ago. He is not complaining. Soltwisch is now doing high-performance CPR, which, experts say, is saving more lives than the CPR protocols of the past. "It's more labor intensive," Soltwisch said.

North Carolina city council member boycotts firefighter graduation because of few minority recruits

Greensboro City Councilwoman Sharon Hightower boycotted a graduation ceremony last week for new firefighters. The reason? Not enough minority recruits in the class. Hightower, who represents District 1 in mostly black East Greensboro, said she skipped the graduation ceremony June 23 on purpose. She said Thursday that she was “very disappointed” to learn that only one of the 18 new firefighters is black.

New York fire chief receives national heroism award

An Irvington fire chief who stopped a man's vicious knife attack on his girlfriend last April has received national recognition for his heroism. Christopher T. DePaoli is one of 23 recipients of a medal for heroism from the Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. DePaoli was with his two daughters near the Irvington train platform when he saw a man repeatedly stab a woman in the back and near area.
