We all hear and see them in our community virtually every day, fire trucks and first responders responding to fire calls. Many times, those calls turn out to be false alarms and fire officials across the nation and our region say they have seen the number of false alarms increasing and that’s creating an unnecessary risk to the public and first responders.

An FDNY lieutenant received a life-saving lung transplant from fallen firefighter William “Billy” Moon — and, in a heartfelt tribute from his hospital bed, thanked the hero’s widow for donating her late husband’s organs. New Delaware Fire Chief Makes History

As we enter Black History Month, a local fire company makes history here on Delmarva. The Carlisle Fire Company recently appointed Shawn Hinton as chief. He is the first African American chief in the department's 221 year history. Chief Hinton has 15 years of experience under his belt and said he is honored to be the new voice of the department.

Growing homeless crisis in California producing bigger impact on Sacramento firefighters

A machete attack and a fire captain punched in the face — it's what Sacramento Metro Fire is facing with a growing homeless crisis. They say their jobs are getting more and more dangerous. Squatters in vacant buildings are responsible for fires causing millions in damage. Metro Fire Capt. Parker Wilbourn said his agency responded to more than 2,500 fire incidents last year directly related to homeless encampments or people experiencing homelessness.

‘Our department is in pain’: Florida fire chief addresses mental health issues following firefighter deaths

‘A tremendous investment’: Alabama fire department receives $1.2 million fire engine

PHOTOS: The city of Opelika just added a new fire engine to its fleet. The new truck, which cost $1.2 million, is called an aerial. It’s the first of four new firetrucks that will arrive this year. The total price for all four firetrucks will be close to $3 million. Opelika Fire Chief Shane Boyd said the new aerial is a multi-purpose truck with a pump, a water tank, a water hose, an aerial device, and ground ladders.

Massachusetts EMTs, firefighters get K9 lifesaving training under Nero's Law

EMTs and firefighters are used to receiving the latest training when it comes to lifesaving care. But on Tuesday, they encountered a different kind of training and patients: High-tech K9 mannequins. Gillette Stadium’s Putnam Club became a classroom of sorts for Bay State EMTs, where their patients for the lifesaving training weren’t humans but man’s best friend.

Georgia fire explorers bring home award from national competition

Explorer Post 469, a junior firefighter program of Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services for high school students, has earned third place in a national competition, the fire department announced. The explorer post left Jan. 26 for the BSA Winterfest Competition Jan. 27 and 28 in Gatlinburg. Over 1,000 explorers and venturers from across the country attended the event this year, the first gathering since 2020.

Ohio: The First Street Fire of 1900 destroyed the city block where the Dayton Dragons stadium now stands

PHOTOS: On Feb. 1, 1900, Dayton experienced what could be the largest fire in the city’s history. The blaze started at the in the Leaf Tobacco Warehouses of J.P. Wolf & Son at the northwest corner of First and Foundry streets. Foundry ran north to south starting at First Street and cut through an area where the Dayton Dragons stadium and plaza now stand.

VIDEO: Helmet footage of a Virginia fire department tackling catering company fire

We are now seeing what firefighters saw as they worked to keep downtown Bedford from going up in flames on Friday. ABC13 received helmet camera footage from the fire department that shows how crews got the fire at the Sister to Sister Custom Catering and Café under control in 50 minutes on Friday. Committee on Public Safety OKs ordinance to protect Chicago Fire Department paramedics 'taking a beating'

Oregon fire engine restored to preserve town's history

IAFF mounts legal push against ‘forever chemicals’: ‘It stops now’

The International Association of Fire Fighters called on Monday for the elimination of protective gear that contains “forever chemicals,” saying swift regulatory action is needed to address the toxic substances. President Joe Biden intends to end the Covid-19 national and public health emergencies on May 11, the White House said Monday. That means that many Americans could have to start paying for Covid-19 testing and treatment after the declarations cease. The White House, in a statement of administration policy announcing opposition to two House Republican measures to end the emergencies, said the national emergency and public health emergency authorities declared in response to the pandemic would each be extended one final time to May 11.

VIDEO: Fire crews respond to two-alarm fire in California

Fire crews responded to a two-alarm apartment fire in Oakland’s Cox neighborhood early Sunday morning, according to the Oakland Fire Department. Crews were called to the fire on the 9500 block of Birch Street and safely evacuated all parties inside of the residence. The property will be salvageable after the blaze, OFD said.

2 Oklahoma firefighters injured after crash on highway

VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Tulsa Fire Department says two firefighters suffered no life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car on Highway 75 Sunday night. In a social post, TFD said a vehicle approaching the scene of a crash near 1100 southbound on Highway 75 lost control and crashed into the original car the firefighters were working on.

New helmet cameras give Iowa first responders a new look inside the fire fight

VIDEO: The Fort Dodge Fire Department is using a new tool to fight fires. The department's new fire cameras are small, lightweight cameras that are mounted to their helmets. They capture footage that most people have never seen before, and that footage could help make firefighting safer in Fort Dodge.
