Over 330 fire departments and 8 countries meet in Seattle for LLS Firefighters Stairclimb

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Thousands of people came together on March 12 at the world’s largest on-air stair climb competition for one mission: cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Held at the Columbia Center in Seattle, the LLS Firefighter Stairclimb hosted more than 2,000 volunteer and professional firefighters from more than 330 departments and 8 countries.

New York has long led the nation in fire deaths, firefighters say

New York is leading the nation for residential fire deaths with 45 fatalities in the first three months of this year — a staggering statistic that highlights the need for legislative action, according to the Firefighters Association of the State of New York. John D’Alessandro, the association's secretary and a volunteer firefighter, said the fatalities have underscored the urgency of legislation that the organization has been pushing for years, including a measure to provide funding to local building departments to conduct routine inspections and ensure multi-family residential and commercial buildings are meeting fire safety codes.

Black women firefighters in Colorado discuss unbreakable bond

It's a bond that has truly been tested by fire. "No words can describe the bond," Lt. Kathleen Hancock said. "I'm super thankful for them." Hancock, Danielle Allen and Brooke Simms are the only Black women working at Aurora Fire Rescue. Their journey together came through different routes. Hancock, a native of Pueblo, lived in Tuscon, Arizona, where she was a physical therapist and athletic trainer.

GoPro video shows Virginia house fire through the eyes of a firefighter

VIDEO/PHOTOS: We have some new video from a house fire in Bedford County on Tuesday night. This GoPro footage shows the fire that happened on Twilight Drive through the eyes of one of the firefighters at the Forest Fire Department. One man was inside the home at the time but got out safely. The home is a total loss and the fire damaged some nearby cars on the property too.

Virginia lawmakers mandate electric vehicle fire risk training

Virginia firefighters will be required to complete a training program starting next year, about the risk of electric vehicle fires. Del. Israel O’Quinn, R-Washington, proposed House Bill 2451 to require the executive director of the Virginia Department of Fire Programs to develop a training program for electric vehicle fires.

FDNY couple trains for New York City Half Marathon

VIDEO: An FDNY couple is preparing for the New York City Half Marathon later this month. Davon Howard is a firefighter at Ladder 162/Engine 304 in Queens Village; his wife, Natasha Howard, is an EMS Lieutenant at EMS Station 57 in Bed-Stuy. The pair met at the EMS Academy in 2007. “Honestly, I didn’t really notice him, but I noticed he kept coming around and one day, we exchanged numbers and we went on a date and that was it,” Natasha said.

North Tahoe Fire Protection District reports increase in gas leaks caused by snowstorms in California

The North Tahoe Fire Protection District reported an alarming increase in gas leaks, carbon monoxide (CO) related emergencies and other hazard-related emergencies resulting from the repeated storms and heavy snow. Since January 1, hazard calls have accounted for nearly 20% of non-EMS incidents. North Tahoe Firefighters are responding to a significant increase in carbon monoxide emergencies throughout the region and authorities say many of these incidents are the result of heavy snow build-up on combustion-appliance venting, buried foundation vents and improper or snow-obstructed home generator ventilation systems.

Texas county EMS to offer whole blood infusions by paramedics to critical patients

Pre-hospital trauma care for patients in Kerr County took a giant step this week as the Kerrville EMS, the city and county’s provider, rolled out a new program that will provide the option of whole blood infusions by paramedics to critical patients before they are transported to the hospital. “We are excited about this program that has been in the works since last year, but a goal for the past three years,” said Kerrville Fire Chief Eric Maloney late last week.

Crews douse flames from Texas apartment complex fire, video shows

VIDEO: Flames robbed several residents of their home after crews battled to put out a massive fire at an apartment complex in the Alief area. SkyEye was over Tuesday's scene in the 8300 block of Wilcrest, where flames were seen shooting through the roof, followed by heavy smoke. Investigators are still working to know what sparked the fire.

‘The Grannys’ play basketball game against Oklahoma fire department to raise money for charity

Florida firefighters respond to call and make lifesaving discovery

VIDEO: The lifesaving equipment St. Lucie County Fire District firefighters started using about three years ago is making history and saving lives. Crews responded to a call about a fall Tuesday in the area of A1A on Hutchinson Island shortly after 8:30 in the morning. While firefighters were on the scene, they were alerted to high levels of carbon monoxide by a detector attached to equipment carried on their belts.

International Women's Day: Police lieutenant was first female firefighter in one west-central North Carolina department

Tayler Alexander was in middle school on 9/11, watching with her classmates as the terrorist attacks unfolded. Federal push for lithium-ion battery safety as New York City fires mount
