Former California volunteer firefighter suspected in fire truck vandalism

It was the banging about 7:30 a.m. Sunday that caught the on-duty engineer’s attention and drew him to a rear window of the Hopland fire station on Feliz Creek Road. Outside, a woman with an aluminum bat was whacking two vehicles in the parking lot, smashing windows, mirrors and lights, and puncturing all the tires.

Second-gen Colorado firefighters step down from career ‘few regret’

Stolen lock box master key prompts security upgrades for Texas buildings, fire and EMS units

Thousands of Austin buildings -- including high-rises and retail stores -- are expected to receive security upgrades after a man somehow got his hands on a master key to their lock boxes and broke into at least two medical facilities. The lock boxes are attached to the outside of buildings that have fire protection systems.

Show of unity for fallen Philadelphia firefighter

Bronx fire victims planning $110M lawsuit against city, FDNY

The city should have taken the toddler who started last month’s deadly Bronx inferno away from his inattentive mom long before the horrific blaze, several victims claim in court documents filed Thursday. Eleven victims of the fire that killed 13 people, filed a notice of claim saying they intend to sue the city for a combined $110 million for failing to keep track of several problems inside the doomed apartment building.

Georgia fire department preserves ladder, contract from 1901 fire truck

In 1901, Dalton firefighters rode horse-drawn trucks to fires. They probably never imagined climbing ladders more than 100 feet tall to battle a blaze, and they'd probably marvel at the high-pressure hoses and other equipment their modern counterparts have. But they'd share a common bond of professionalism and courage, and they'd probably be honored to know that a piece of their history has recently come home to Fire Station 1 on School Street, which contains the department's administrative offices.

Veteran firefighter and 2-time chief of Florida fire department dead at 91

Miles Richard Bowers' first job as a firefighter in 1948 was to help tackle one of Jacksonville's worst fires at a paint factory. One of his last jobs was in 2003 when he was named the city's fire chief for the second time. He had previously led the department from 1984 to 1988. Bowers, who served longer than any other firefighter on the force, died Tuesday after a stroke.

Judge sets two sessions for state of New Jersey, Atlantic City firefighters to negotiate cuts

Attorneys for the state and the city firefighters union will have two court-approved mediation sessions this month to try to resolve issues regarding salary cuts and a possible 10 to 12 more layoffs. Both parties were back in court Wednesday, as Superior Court Judge Julio Mendez reviewed state-proposed staffing and salary cuts for the Fire Department in the ongoing case between International Association of Fire Fighters Local 198 and state.

After heading Pennsylvania fire company since 1971, 'old-school' chief steps down

Unique. Dedicated. Old-school. A straight-shooter. Quite a character. Those are just some of the ways people describe Al Ewing Sr. Ewing joined the Fawn No. 2 volunteer fire company when he moved to the township from Arnold in 1966, and had been its chief since 1971. At the end of 2017, Ewing stepped down and let a younger generation take over.

Heated negotiations between California county and firefighters coming out of deficit, critical report

The County of Kern will go into negotiations with its fire union in the next few weeks, if not the next few days, and the stakes will be high. In response to rising toll of active shooter and hostile events, NFPA to fast-track a new standard for unified response

Cal Fire releases preliminary report on firefighter fatality at Thomas Fire

CAL FIRE has released a “Green Sheet” preliminary report for the line of duty death of CAL FIRE Fire Apparatus Engineer Cory Iverson of the CAL FIRE San Diego/San Diego County Fire Authority. Engineer Iverson was overrun by fire and killed December 14, 2017 while battling the Thomas Fire in Ventura County north of Fillmore, California.
