2 killed, 1 missing after Hard Rock Hotel collapse in Louisiana, building still unstable

VIDEO: One person is still missing, believed to be trapped inside the Hard Rock Hotel after the building partially collapsed without warning Saturday morning. Rescue efforts are still the focus. Engineers are evaluating the building and crews are assembling a 220,000-pound crane to try to stabilize the building, but rescue teams are unable to get to some areas due to fears of another collapse.

Fire marshals charge man in vandalism of six FDNY ambulances in the Bronx

Surveillance of an EMS station in the Bronx on Saturday night led to the arrest of a 22-year-old man, hours after multiple acts of vandalism carried out on FDNY ambulances. Karim Murdoch is accused of causing damage to six vehicles at Station 15 hours before the arrest, which included broken windows and graffiti, according to a statement issued Sunday by FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro.

New indoor facility to test drones, other technology for public safety opens at Colorado airport

The sounds of drones on hand weren’t the only buzz filling the new Colorado Center of Excellence for Advanced Technology Aerial Firefighting (CoE) Technodrome last week at Rifle Garfield County Airport. Illinois Aldermen Back Property Tax Break For Spouses Of Fallen Police Officers, Firefighters, Paramedics

Calling it “just a small token of appreciation,” Chicago aldermen on Thursday gave preliminary approval to an ordinance that would provide a property tax break to the spouses of police officers, firefighters, and paramedics who die in the line of duty. The measure sponsored by Ald. Patrick Daley Thompson (11th) would allow those spouses to apply for a waiver of the city’s portion of their property tax bill for as long as they remain unmarried, and stay in the home where they lived with their wife or husband.

After fatal fire, Pennsylvania city council wants to finalize day care ordinance to improve safety

A proposed new ordinance aimed at improving safety at Erie day care facilities could be on Erie City Council’s agenda by the end of November. Full church honors California fire captain who died in line of duty

A decorated Merced County Cal Fire captain was laid to rest Thursday after a traditional processional through the city of Merced and services at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Capt. FAA data from 1991 through this August shows at least 48 e-cigarette related smoke or fire incidents at airports or on planes. An emergency in Kentucky 911 Center? As number of calls jump, more staff needed

Lexington’s 911 emergency center is struggling to keep up as fewer call takers and dispatchers attempt to answer a swelling number of calls and help an increasing number of police and firefighters, city officials said Tuesday. The Enhanced 911 Center answered 477,711 calls last year. Of those, more than 217,000 are 911 or emergency calls.

Rescue squad in Vermont launches successful apprenticeship program

“The unicorn program.” That is how a recent student with the Bennington Rescue Squad described the organization’s year-long apprenticeship program. Bill Camarda, Deputy Executive Director, oversees the only EMS apprenticeship program registered with the state of Vermont. Bennington rescue launched its program in December 2018 and is in the process of interviewing applicants for its third cohort, said Camarda.

Spray-on skin helps Missouri firefighter heal from serious burns

Alaska fire department budget $4 million short, prompting equipment shutdown policy

Pennsylvania municipalities receive nearly $450,000 in annual state aid for fire relief associations

Municipalities in and around our coverage area have received about $450,000 in state aid to go towards their local volunteer fire relief association, according to the auditor general's office. Flames, heavy smoke destroy several shops in Seattle; Two-thirds of Seattle's firefighting fleet responded

Several shops were destroyed by a major fire in downtown Ballard on the 2300 block of NW Market Street. The fire started around noon on Monday. Flames and heavy smoke poured out of the building. La Isla restaurant, Supercuts, Kitchen N Things and Octo Designs & Jewelers sustained heavy damage and are a total loss.
