Wisconsin rescue squad to disband; call volume, lack of volunteers cited as reasons

The Burlington Rescue Squad will dissolve at the end of the year due to difficulties keeping up with increased call volume and a decline in volunteerism, Mayor Jeannie Hefty has announced. The dissolution will leave the City of Burlington Fire Department to pick up rescue services for city residents.

As an emergency medicine resident at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Zachary Wettstein, MD, has seen the effects of wildfires firsthand. On days when it’s really smoky, he says, “I’m not surprised that I’m seeing more people with shortness of breath.” Densely smoky days certainly are growing as wildfire season worsens, experts say, spurred in part by such environmental changes as earlier snowmelts that can cause drier, hotter conditions.

Arkansas firefighters to see pay increase due to new state minimum wage law

In 2020 Arkansas' minimum wage goes up 75 cents: from $9.25 an hour to $10 an hour. For firefighters starting out in Harrison, they currently only make $9.40 an hour. “Roughly 10 members of our department were going to fall below that minimum wage if we didn’t do something," said Harrison Fire Chief Marc Lowery.

Three Texas first responders were struck and killed by vehicles while on duty in a week's time — prompting officials to remind motorists to move over and slow down for roadside emergency vehicles. On October 7, 2019, two Louise Volunteer Fire Department firefighters, having cleared a previous call, stopped in their lane of travel on Farm-to-Market (FM) 647, south of Highway 59 near Louise, Texas, to check the fire engine's front tires, believing something was wrong.

Massachusetts female firefighter/paramedic commands incident, makes history

Full-time firefighter/paramedic Wendy Ashworth made history last week in the Acushnet Fire and EMS Department when she became the first female member of the department to command an incident. Ashworth, 56, is the only full-time female firefighter in the department, according to Chief Kevin Gallagher.

Stress-related disability claims filed by police, firefighters expected to increase under new Oregon law

Portland’s public safety disability fund expects to receive 10 new claims a year from police or firefighters seeking benefits for two types of stress disorders as the result of a new state law that went into effect last month. Lawmakers this summer approved Senate Bill 507 to define post-traumatic stress and acute stress disorders as occupational diseases for full-time police, firefighters, 911 emergency dispatchers, corrections officers and emergency medical service providers.

Ohio city planning to close long-standing fire station, eliminate battalion chiefs

Live video option lets North Carolina county 911 see your emergency

Parolees Help Battle California's Saddleridge Fire as Part of New Reentry Program

A new program designed to help former offenders pursue a career in firefighting made its first deployment over the weekend to help battle the Saddleridge Fire in the San Fernando Valley. New Jersey fire academy welcomes largest, most diverse class of recruits

Passaic County Fire Academy welcomed the largest and most diverse class of recruits on Monday. Missouri: Firefighter’s equipment update sends EKG results to emergency room

Firefighters now have the ability to send an EKG of your heart within seconds of arriving at your location in an emergency. “Oh, it could save someone’s life. Washington Department of Ecology will collect and incinerate toxic firefighting foam

The Washington Department of Ecology announced Monday it will begin collecting and incinerating stockpiles of a toxic fire retardant foam that was used by fire departments for decades before the state restricted its use in 2018. The same type of foam was long used at Fairchild Air Force Base and blamed for contaminating West Plains water supplies, including the city of Airway Heights' tap system.

Firefighter shot when ammo pops off during house fire in southeast Oklahoma, officials say

Members of the Latimer County community are asking for prayers after they said a local firefighter was shot during a house fire and the fire chief had to be taken to an area hospital after experiencing a medical episode. According to officials with Latimer County Emergency Management, the members of the Buffalo Valley Fire Department were battling a fire at a house that was full of ammunition.

2 killed, 1 missing after Hard Rock Hotel collapse in Louisiana, building still unstable

VIDEO: One person is still missing, believed to be trapped inside the Hard Rock Hotel after the building partially collapsed without warning Saturday morning. Rescue efforts are still the focus. Engineers are evaluating the building and crews are assembling a 220,000-pound crane to try to stabilize the building, but rescue teams are unable to get to some areas due to fears of another collapse.
