‘We need to do something:’ Ohio group raises awareness about cancer epidemic in firefighters

Wednesday was National First Responders Day, intended to honor the men and women putting their lives on the line day after day. Unfortunately, with that comes the danger of illnesses, among them cancer, the leading cause of death in firefighters. It’s why the Ohio Firefighters Attacking the Cancer Epidemic Group, known as the FACE team, gathered Wednesday afternoon to bring awareness to what they describe as a crisis.

Areas With Mask Mandates Have Lower COVID-19 Hospitalization Rate, Study Finds

National First Responders Day: New York firefighter honored by Disney

It's National First Responders Day -- a day when the country comes together as a country to recognize the heroes who choose to run toward danger to save lives. Among them, firefighter Al Coombs of Brooklyn, who says he was inspired by his nurse mother. He was honored by our parent company Disney. The 43-year-old is a first responder at Engine 224 in Brooklyn Heights.

Third-alarm fire erupts in California strip mall

PHOTOS: Approximately 60 firefighters are working a 3rd-alarm fire in the city of San Bernardino Tuesday night. The fire was reported before 8:00 PM on October 27, 2020, at 4183 N Mountain View Avenue in San Bernardino. San Bernardino County Fire tweeted about the incident and reported fire in a multi unit strip mall with significant ember cast.

Officials battle massive structure fire in South Carolina

PHOTOS: The Sumter Fire Department is battling a structure fire near South Lafayette Drive and Fulton Street that broke out a little after 10 p.m. Tuesday. The building, the former VB Williams Furniture Plant located at 602 E Fulton St, is engulfed in flames. The building is now known as Howell’s recyclable Materials, a recyclables warehouse according to officials.

Real-Time Overdose Tracking Helps Show COVID-19’s Effects

COVID-19 may dominate the headlines. But another epidemic that was already raging before it arrived has flared up in recent months, too, according to new University of Michigan data. A real-time tracking system that launched in 2019 shows a 15% rise in suspected opioid overdose deaths across most of Michigan since March, compared with the same time last year, and a 29% rise in first responders’ use of a rescue drug called naloxone that can reverse an opioid overdose if given in time.

Florida firefighters win first place in Firefighter Combat Challenge world championship

A group of St. Lucie County firefighters are world champions after winning first place in the team category of the 2020 Firefighter Combat Challenge held over the weekend in Texas. Brian Riebe, Kevin Reilly, Caden Wilson, Matt Coney and Dante Hill of the St. Lucie County Fire District had the best averaged completion time of the course dubbed as the "toughest two minutes in sports" by ESPN.

Florida fire rescue debuts new, life-saving helicopters with state of the art technology

VIDEO: BSO Fire Rescue has a new tool it is using to help the public and save lives. Local 10 News got an exclusive look at their upgraded EMS rescue helicopters. Firefighter rescued while battling Georgia hotel blaze

VIDEO: DeKalb County firefighters saved one of their own after he fell through the floor while trying to put out an overnight hotel fire. Michigan: Clinton Township firefighters reflect on department's 75th anniversary

In 1974, the television program “Emergency!” made Paul Brouwer, 72, keen on becoming a firefighter. “It was all the rage at the time,” he recalled. The current township emergency manager since 1991, he spent about 30 years in the Clinton Township Fire Department before retiring in 2004 as deputy chief of operations.

South Carolina firefighters deliver 200 opioid antidotes in effort to prevent overdoses

According to DHEC, South Carolina firefighters are reaching a milestone of 200 naloxone administrations for suspected opioid overdoses this year as of October 21st. The Reducing Opioid Loss of Life (ROLL) program trains any fire department to administer the opioid antidote naloxone, including departments not staffed with emergency medical technicians.

US hits highest 7-day average of coronavirus cases since the pandemic began

The latest surge of COVID-19 infections has pushed the seven-day average of new daily cases to heights not seen since the pandemic began. The seven-day average of new cases hit 68,767 on Sunday, topping the previous peak of 67,293 reported on July 22. The two highest single days of new cases were Friday and Saturday, with more than 83,000 new cases added each day.

Man arrested for striking on-duty California firefighter with car

A San Pablo man was arrested on suspicion of striking an on-duty firefighter with his vehicle in Petaluma early Saturday, police said. Petaluma police responded at about 3:11 a.m. to a call from their city’s fire department reporting that one of their firefighters “had just been intentionally stuck by a vehicle,” police said.

California's I-80 reopens after crash, brush fire

VIDEO: A crash that sparked a brush fire forced the closure of part of Interstate 80 in Placer County for several hours Thursday. A vehicle slammed into a power pole on westbound I-80 at Highway 193 in the Newcastle area, knocking powerlines onto the highway and Ophir Road and igniting a fire, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Office.

On Thursday, Brittani Rawls became Passaic Fire Department's first female tillerman. That's the firefighter who sits in a seat in back and steers the tail end of a firetruck. It's the kind of challenge she relishes, because in a city crammed with traffic, tight streets and double-parked cars, life for the tillerman is never dull.
